Joseph John Winkler

Joseph John Winkler, of Castroville, passed away on April 10, 2022 at the age of 43. He was born May 27, 1978 in San Antonio, Texas to Larry Walter Winkler and Cynthia 'Cindy' Lee Young Winkler.
Joseph graduated from Hondo High School in 1996. He received his Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Texas in Austin. On August 16, 2003, Joseph married Jana Koreen Tyler in Hondo, Texas. They were blessed with eighteen years of marriage and three children.
His children, Jett, Jonah, and Julia were the joy of his life. He loved attending their school and athletic events and encouraged them to do their best. Joseph was an excellent athlete. Joseph was an avid swimmer. He was training for the United States Masters National Championships later this month at the Northside Aquatic Center. He was instrumental in creating the Medina Valley High School swim team.
In 2005, Joseph and his wife, Jana, moved from Austin and purchased the Alsatian Inn, which they have renamed the Hillside Boutique Hotel, in Castroville. They began the first of four phases of the hotel renovations, turning it into a beautiful property. The restaurant was re-opened, and a spa was added to make the hotel the perfect destination for a weekend getaway, a wedding venue or celebration.
Survivors include his wife, Jana Winkler of Castroville; children, Jett Winkler, Jonah Winkler, and Julia Winkler; parents, Larry and Cindy Winkler of Hondo; sister and brother-in-law, Jessica and Breck Harmel; brother, Joshua Winkler; parents-in-law, Edie and Bentley Tyler of San Antonio; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Britney and Dr. Ali Abedi of San Antonio; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives.
Joseph was preceded in death by his grandparents; Jack and Evelyn Winkler, and William 'Bill' and Nell Young.
Visitation will be Tuesday, April 19, 2022 from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Castroville. A Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 20, 2022 at the First Baptist Church of Castroville. Interment will follow at Quihi Cemetery in Quihi, Texas. A reception will follow the cemetery committal service.
In lieu of flowers, Joseph's family requests memorials may be made in his memory to the scholarship fund that has been set up for his children at Castroville State Bank.
