Kenneth Pugh Dean, age 72, beloved husband, brother, father, grandfather, and Cajun chef, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 17, 2023, at his cabin in Shongaloo, a place he lovingly referred to as Paradise. Kenny was born in
Shreveport, LA, on February 3, 1950, to the late Henry and Mary Ellen Pugh Dean. A lifelong, devout Catholic, he attended St. Joseph Catholic School and later graduated from Jesuit High School despite his tendency for mischief. After high school, he proudly enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served as a Cryptologic Technician aboard the USS Stribling, a Gearing-class Destroyer that took him to nearly every corner of the globe. Following his honorable discharge from the Navy, he attended Louisiana Tech University in
Ruston, LA, and graduated with a degree in Forestry. His entrepreneurial spirit then prompted him to launch many successful endeavors in the renewable resources industry.
Because of his love for the outdoors, you could usually find Kenny tending his garden, fishing in his pond, crabbing in South Louisiana, or blasting classic rock while tinkering in his yard. He was also a fierce fan of the LSU Tigers football and softball teams. But his true passion was cooking gumbo, jambalaya, seafood, and anything else that brought the family together.
Kenny had a zest for life that was truly one-of-a-kind. His quick wit and knack for storytelling always made him the life of the party. He loved a good prank, but he was full of generosity and always helped those in need, particularly the residents of the Providence House.
Kenny will be dearly missed by his loving and devoted wife of 14 years, Bettye; his children Christopher Dean (and wife Claire), Jennifer (Dean) Thomas (and husband Wesley), and Eric Dean (and wife Melisa); his stepson, Timothy Lee; his mischievous but wonderful grandchildren Morgan, Ava, Sydney, Reese, Dean, Harper, Charlotte, Harlan, Laken, Erin, and Bradi; his sisters Marianne (Dean) Loftin and Nancy (Dean) Scurlock; his brothers Jim Dean, John Dean and Robert Dean; his sister-in-law Jo Campbell; his brother-in-law Bill Dougharty; his dear friend Father Charles Glorioso; Buddy the Dog; and too many nieces, nephews, and friends to count. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother-in-law and close friend, Gary Loftin, and his cherished niece, Holly Loftin.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Holy Angels in Shreveport, as Kenny loved supporting the wonderful residents that lived there. A funeral service will be held to celebrate the life of Kenny at St. Joseph Church, 1210 Anniston Ave,
Shreveport, LA 71105, on Friday, January 20, 2023, at 11:00 a.m.
