Nancy Cowan Godwin Johnston, 89 passed away on Friday February 10, 2023. Nancy was born on February 1, 1934 in Mineola, Texas in her family home on Wigley Street. She was preceded in death by her husband Melvin Godwin and her husband John Marshall Cathey. Her father Dr. A.O. Cowan, her mother Connie Mae Tharp Cowan, and her son Stephen Godwin. Also, her brother George Cowan, sisters Connie Horton and Joan Wisdom.
She is survived by her husband Dean Johnston, her baby sister Patricia Masset of Tyler. 3 children, Kim (Coy) Douglas of Edom, Jesse Godwin of Ben Wheeler, and Connie (Steve) Cobbs of Mineola. Grandchildren Polly (Nelson) Jones, Allison Godwin, Chris (Jana) Largent, George Crenshaw, Samuel Lowe, and Nancy Godwin. Great-grand children Weston Keith, Langston Crenshaw, and Elliott Godwin. Plus, many cousins, nieces and nephews.
She was a life-long resident of Mineola and a member of The First Christian Church of Mineola. Her fondest childhood memories were her daily trips to the farm with her father. She loved helping feed the cows, the quail, and the horses. She married Melvin when she was 17 years old, they made their home in Mineola and raised their children. She was an amazing cook, seamstress, gardener and artist. She loved to read and learn new things, especially about history. Her favorite TV program was Gunsmoke. She cherished the friendships she made through her many years in Beta Sigma Pi and Eastern Star. Her greatest love was for her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Her family will miss her delicious Christmas Fruit Cookies and her wonderful homemade pimento-cheese.
She is so very loved, and she is so very missed. Such a blessing to call her Mama, Mimi and friend.
A private family graveside ceremony will be held at the family cemetery on February 25, 2023 at 11.00 a.m.
