A famous musician once wrote, “Music is your own special feelings, your thoughts, and your wisdom. If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn”. Nat Raider was a such a man; one who performed all the many marvels of his amazing, joyous life for those who were so fortunate to be in his audience.
What flowed from Nat’s music was a loving devotion to his wonderful wife Bea and his two very special daughters. An accomplished conductor, arranger, trumpet player and producer, his was a vibrant, diverse, and successful career.
His music, his generosity, and his engaging personality touched thousands in Montreal - and all over North America. Attending a wedding, a bar mitzvah, or a large corporate event often meant that you were entertained by The Nat Raider Orchestra. Well known and well respected as the Musical Director of the Montreal Forum, Nat accompanied, composed, and arranged for some of the most famous celebrity acts of our time.
He knew music would be his profession at the beginning of his life. Born in Montreal to Annie and Harry Raider on August 3rd, 1929, Nat disciplined himself to practice trumpet as a young man, while the other boys were playing outside. His practice lead to a scholarship at Tanglewood, New Jersey, with Leonard Bernstein as his mentor. Nat began his career playing trumpet in the orchestra cruising the Sanguenay River, which lead to playing in bands on radio shows, TV shows, nightclubs, social events and concerts. The Nat Raider Orchestra blossomed into a much loved and demanded entertainment attraction. The band constantly accompanied well-known classical and contemporary artists and vocalists, produced the music for Broadway and variety shows, and also provided orchestral back-up for comedians.
Nat recorded five record albums for the Canadian Talent Library over the years. He then became adept at producing large conventions and corporate events for many big companies, providing music, entertainment, décor and gastronomy to make exciting and fulfilling special events for happy clients. Nat also modeled in his spare time, and as a member of ACTRA had roles in a number locally produced films.
An active tennis player, avid golfer and, recently, a talented bridge player, this was a man in tune with the love of being alive. Nat was in harmony with so many friends, family, and colleagues. He lived his life in the key of happiness.
His song has ended… but his beautiful music will play on forever.
Nat Raider died on July 24th, 2010 in Montreal. He was 80 years old.
Beloved husband of Beatrice Raider, father of Barbara (and the late Mart Teplitsky) and Cindy Raider. Son of the late Annie and Harry Raider. Memories of Nat
My fondest memory of my father lies in the way he made me appreciate music. My life is a wonderful song. And he introduced me to so many other things, with his positive spirit and generous nature. I miss him very much but he's with me all the time, in my heart.

My Father was a special and unique man. Someone with immense talent, drive and flair. A larger than life character who paved the way for many in his field. His love and loyalty to his family was evident throughout our childhood and adulthood. When I began working with him at Nat Raider Productions he really showed me the ropes and taught me all his good work ethics, but he also allowed me to grow and was proud that I joined the business. I miss him every single day, but have a wealth of wonderful memories that will stay with me always. I consider myself very lucky to have shared so many experiences with him for so long and will love him forever!
