Norma K. Deist, age 99 of Edwardsville, IL passed away on October 27, 2023, at Meridian Village in Glen Carbon, IL. Norma was born on June 9, 1924, along with twin sister Lorna L. (Meyer) Wiemers in Prairietown, IL. She married Col. Leonard F. Deist on January 15, 1944, and he preceded her in death on April 2, 1993. Norma was also preceded in death by her son Steven L. Deist and daughter Andrea K. Durham. She is survived by six grandchildren, Angela Sastry (John), Carrie Beavers (Jeff), Timothy Durham (Valeriya), Steven Deist II (Molly), Andrew Durham (Jessica), Eric Deist (Catherine), along with many great grandchildren whom she adored. Also surviving are son in law Rolla Durham and daughter in law Sue Deist.
Norma lived a full life and was a friend to many, but the one constant that remained in her heart was that "family is everything". She was a masterful host for family holidays and dinner parties, honing her skills over many years of hosting family and military dignitaries alike. Norma was always, however, quick to pontificate that she could never accomplish a pie crust as perfectly as her sister Lorna. In civilian life, Norma spent years working at Standard Oil and was active with the Girl Scouts of America during Andrea's youth. Norma was very proud of her husband's military career in the USAF and faithfully supported him over the many years in which he was on active duty. Later in life, Norma cherished her birthdays at the homestead in Prairietown, courtesy of Dan (Nancy) Wiemers and Myron (Kathy) Wiemers. She was always relieved when Dan confirmed with her that all the crops were harvested, and a successful season was accomplished.
For many years, Norma was an active member at Trinity Lutheran Church in Edwardsville. Her faith was of importance to her, and a meal wasn't consumed without grace beforehand. Norma's love, affection, and wisdom will forever permeate through the lives of her grandchildren, family, and friends. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Thursday, November 2, 2023, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Edwardsville. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, at the church with Rev. John Shank officiating. The family requests memorials to the American Diabetes Association. Weber & Rodney Funeral Home in Edwardsville is in charge of arrangements. Condolences may be expressed online at weberfuneralhome.com.
