Orville L. Pettis, passed away in the comfort of his home on August 29, 2025 at the age of 96. He was born on January 23, 1929, in Armstrong, Iowa and spent much of his youth living in Minnesota. He was a longtime resident and respected local business owner in Toms River, New Jersey. Orville's life was marked by his dedication to his family, his work, and the joy he found in the simple pleasures of life.
Orville was the loving husband of the late Frances N. Pettis, with whom he shared a lifetime of memories until her passing in 2018. Together, they raised their daughter Linda Pettis Clayton, who brought further joy to their lives along with her husband, Jeffrey Clayton. Orville was a proud grandfather to Katharyn Clayton Case and her husband, Brian Case. His legacy continued with his adored great-grandchildren, Rebecca and Jeffrey Case, who will carry forward the wisdom and kindness he imparted.
After completing his education, Orville proudly served his country through his work in aeronautic repair and maintenance at McGuire Air Force Base. His technical skills and unwavering work ethic were the backbone of his service. Following his military service, Orville channeled his passion for precision and craftsmanship into his own business. He and his wife Frances opened the Pettis Clock Shop in 1965. For 56 years, he was the trusted proprietor, dedicating his days to the meticulous care and restoration of timepieces, a testament to his patience and attention to detail.
Orville's interests were as timeless as the clocks he cherished. His hands were rarely still, often found tending to his garden, mowing his lawn meticulously, or restoring antiques to their former glory. Each treasure he restored seemed to tell stories of the past, stories Orville loved to share through his talent for storytelling and his fondness for singing songs from his youth.
Those who knew Orville will remember him as a wise, generous, and handy man. He possessed an innate ability to fix almost anything, a skill matched only by the generosity with which he shared his knowledge and time. Orville's wisdom was sought after by many and his advice was delivered with real life experiences that guided those around him.
Orville's life was a reflection of the values he held dear: integrity, dedication, and love for his family. His presence was a steady, calming force, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Orville leaves behind a legacy of love, a multitude of memories, and a world that is undoubtedly better for his having been in it. His family takes solace in knowing that his was a life well-lived, full of purpose and brimming with the joy of everyday wonders. As the hands of time continue to move forward, Orville's memory will remain timeless in the hearts of those he loved and those who loved him.

I'm saddened to hear of Orville's passing. Although our paths crossed briefly, about 25 years ago, I will never forget him. We shared an interest in 78 rpm phonograph records and the fabulous music contained on them. I also remember his Ford Model A Victoria, but mostly I remember his kindness and hospitality.
