Robert E. Thompson, 94, of Bridgewater died peacefully on Monday, April 15, 2024 at Bridgewater Retirement Community.
He was born to Imogene and Paul E. Thompson of Dayton, Virginia, on August 11, 1929. He had a younger brother, Charles.
He was a member of the Dayton Church of the Brethren. He graduated from Dayton High School in 1947. He served as an Army Guard at Fort Knox in Kentucky from 1951-52. He worked at Dayton Transport for twenty years and then was co-owner of Extinguisher Sales and Service in Harrisonburg for eighteen years.
He was a dedicated Lion's Club member in Dayton and Augusta for over 64 years. He served as Secretary and Treasurer for over forty years and was "The Broom Man" of Bridgewater selling Lion's Club brooms. He was selected as a Lifetime Member for all his work and community service in the Lions Club.
He married the love of his life, Betty, in 1967 and they were happily married until her passing in May 2023. Left to cherish his memory are his brother-in-law and wife, many nieces and nephews; great-nieces and nephews; great-great-nieces and nephew, and many dear friends and neighbors who were like family.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 19, 2024, at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens with Pastor Kevin Daggett officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Bridgewater Rescue Squad: PO Box 268, Bridgewater, VA 22812, Bridgewater Fire Department: 304 N. Main Street Bridgewater, VA 22812, or Augusta Lions Club, c/o Fred Leach, PO Box 2613, Staunton, VA 24402.
Arrangements are entrusted to Johnson Funeral and Cremation Service in Bridgewater.
