Ronald William Speer, 72, of Hartsville, died Monday morning, October 21, 2024 at his home.
Ron was born January 15, 1952 in Columbus, the son of Wm. Robert and Marifrances (Rogers) Speer. He married Nancy Y. Murphy on May 21, 1972 at Burnsville Christian Church, and she survives.
Ron was a lifelong farmer in Rockcreek Township. After he graduated from Columbus High School in 1970, he served in the US National Guard (1971-1976). While a member of Burnsville Christian Church, he served as Deacon, Sunday School Superintendent, Treasurer, and Youth Sponsor. More recently, Ron was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Columbus, where he served as an usher at Thursday Worship Services.
Ron and Nancy served in various capacities with the Bartholomew County Farm Bureau including as directors from Rockcreek Township. Ron also served on the Bartholomew County Extension Board, on the Rockcreek Township Advisory Board, and on Columbus Salvation Army Board. In 1990, Ron was "A Classic Farmer" in an advertisement for Classic Pesticide of the DuPont Company.
Ron loved life on the family farm, and his involvement with Republican politics. One of his fondest memories was attending the Presidential inauguration in January of 2017.
The funeral will be conducted 12:30 p.m. Thursday, October 24, 2024, at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home with the Revs. Reeves Flint & Marcus Speer officiating. Calling will be from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Burnsville Christian Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Our Hospice of South Central Indiana.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Nancy Speer; sons, Marcus (Jennifer) Speer of Elizabethtown, and Andy (Sarah) Speer of Columbus; grandchildren, Madelyn, Albany, and Colton Speer.
Ron was preceded in death by his parents, Bob & Marifrances and his sister, Patty Unrue.
