Sylvio Nolette died peacefully, surrounded by his three children, at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough on February 1, 2025.
He was born on October 5, 1934, in Saco, the son of Oscar Nolette and Aurore (St. Onge) Nolette. After graduating from Saint Louis High School in Biddeford in 1952, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and ended up assigned to Fort Huachuca, Arizona. He married Joan Binette on September 1, 1958, at St. Joseph's Church in Biddeford.
After completing his time in the Army, Sylvio returned to Maine, where he worked at the former John's Texaco in Saco and then for many years at St. Johnsbury Trucking in Scarborough until his retirement. At home, he was a devoted husband and father. He was a jack-of-all-trades who could expand a room in his house, add a new room, or build a camping trailer for his family from scratch. Few details escaped him. He was quick to point out when a movie supposedly set in 1948 had a car that was actually a 1952 model!
He lived in Hollis for the last quarter century, where he enjoyed putting around the house and yard. He always liked trains and trucks and building model ships and airplanes. Once he discovered YouTube, he loved to watch various train, truck and snowplow videos!
When his wife Joan developed dementia, Sylvio insisted that he would care for her at home 24/7, which he did until it became impossible, just shortly before her death in 2023.
Above all, Sylvio always had a strong and quiet Catholic faith and was a great example to his children.
He is survived by his three children, Fr. Mark Nolette of Rochester, NY, Peter (and Linda) Nolette of Waterboro, and Nancy Nolette of Hollis; two grandchildren, Christopher and Kay Nolette of Waterboro, two siblings, Dorothie (Nolette) Laverriere and Oscar Nolette, Jr., of Biddeford, and a number of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by four siblings, Gerry Nolette of Biddeford, Raymond Nolette of Virginia Beach, VA, Cecile (Nolette) Webster of Biddeford and Ralph Nolette of Sanford.
A Funeral Mass will be held on February 17, 2025, at 11 am at St. Joseph's Church in Biddeford. Burial will be in the spring.
