JANE PORTNOY Obituary

PORTNOY--Jane M.D., age 75, died on March 28 at the Hospital of The University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Portnoy, Professor of Ophthalmology at the Scheie Eye Institute, University of Pennsylvania, was the first woman board- certified ophthalmologist in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Educated at Woodmere Academy and Mount Holyoke College, she completed her medical training, internship and residency at the University of Louisville, followed by a Fellowship in neuro-ophthalmology at the University of Iowa. Dr. Portnoy spent more than ten years in practice in Louisville followed by twenty-seven years in Philadelphia, first at Temple University, and for the last two decades at Scheie. She was regarded as a brilliant diagnostician, but also as a physician who brought the "human touch" to the practice of medicine. Dr. Portnoy was also the author of A Jewish Calendar of Festive Foods, a cookbook based upon the Jewish months and holidays. Though destined for distinction as a doctor, she began her career as a teacher of French at Scarsdale High School, and her love of French culture and cuisine was lifelong. She danced as well, participating for several summers in the American Dance Festival at Connecticut College where she studied with Alvin Ailey and Merce Cunningham and tap-danced well into her seventies. An expert gardener and knitter, she was passionate about music and sang in synagogue and community choirs her entire life. She is survived by her husband of fifty-one years, Cantor Marshall Portnoy, and their children Julie Beth Portnoy Simon (Alex) and Michael Portnoy; grandson Jordan Max Simon; and a brother Daniel Zuger. Funeral services are private. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Dr. Jane Portnoy Memorial Fund at the Scheie Eye Institute at Penn Medicine. Please mail checks, payable to "Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania" with "In Memory of Jane Portnoy" written on the memo line to: Penn Medicine Development, Attn: Mary Tong, 3535 Market Street, Suite 750, Philadelphia, PA 19129.

As my mom's yartzeit (germanic spelling) is approaching I want to share this memory. We would go swimming at st joes together and there were often quotes outside the locker room that the swim coach would put out. The one that sticks in my memory is "If you think you can or you think you can't, either way you're right"
Mom always pointed that out and told me not to forget it.
That memory popped into my head today and is really resonating, so much so that I feel compelled to write about it now. We must put the hard work in and we must get to the point in whatever we are doing that the technical process is automatic. But this is only the beginning. We must trust in ourselves to make this technical knowledge come to life, and we must believe in what we have to offer despite obstacles and the opinions of others. I want to say right here, right now that if I believed everything everyone ever told me I wouldn't leave my house or sing another note in my life.. What got me through every time were mom's words.
If you are feeling down remember that it is your job to fulfill your own purpose and not be tethered by the opinions of others. The more difficult opinions are the destructive ones we internalize. Remember to choose CAN, not CAN"T.

I only got to see Dr. Portnoy once at Penn Medicine. Every holiday I think of her when I use her holiday cookbook. Today I'm making her zesty horseradish and her potato kugel. Wonderful recipes from a wonderful doctor.

I will always remember Jane, my longtime close friend who I met in Louisville, KY. We shared a love of Judaism, antiquing, eating and every milestone related to our children.
When we were younger we shared our deepest thoughts on everything, together. She was a rare gem who always made me feel appreciated. I love her with all my heart. May her memory be a blessing to her family and everyone she touched. She died much too young. I miss her deeply.
All my love, Jill Klein Bisker and family

Dear Portnoy Family
We are so saddened to learn of Jane passing.
Jane was our Ophtomologist for many years, and the care we got is beyond description. We became friends several years ago when Jane was seeking to get home care for her mother. It was our honor to have her friendship. She was a remarkable caring and beautiful human being. I will always cherish conversations we had throughout the years, and am so glad that I have her wonderful cook book. Our deepest condolences to the family. May she rest in peace, and may her memory be a blessing.

I saw Dr. Portnoy only once but had hoped to continue as her patient. I hadn't realized we had so much in common - Mt Holyoke, music and knitting. I'm so sorry I didn't get to knower sooner.

Jane & Marty welcomed me into the Jewish Community when I moved to Louisville in 1976, then were one of the 1st to welcome me back after my training in 1988. She was a trusted colleague for my patients. I was saddened when she moved from Louisville to Philafelphia but thrilled for her elevation in the field of Neuro-ophthalmology in a major university setting. I am shocked and deeply saddened to learn of her passing. May her memory be a blessing.

May your hearts soon be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life well lived. I worked with Dr Portnoy from 1986 till she left Louisville at Kentucky Eye Care. It was an educational experience working with her and seeing her care for many ill patients and help in finding out their diagnosis and getting them treatment. May she Rest In Peace now that her work is done.

Mom-

It is impossible to put my feelings into words. The love you had for me and the love we had for each other was all encompassing. We understood each other's glances, moods and body language. We were and always will be bonded. Even though physically you aren’t here, I will try to harness your strength and values inside of me. Maybe if I can do this, I can become a fraction of the mother, wife and human being that you were and always will be.

You saw the good in everyone. If I made a negative comment, which isn’t unusual, you always would spin it around and help me see the other perspective. You always believed things could and would get better and that people are intrinsically good, and you were right.

You saw the good in me even when I failed to see it in myself. You were there for me always and your belief in me was completely and unconditionally unwavering. Thank you for being the best mom anyone could possibly imagine. I know that because you were and always will be my mom, I am the luckiest person ever.

You always will be amazing in so many ways. A true pioneer, you made your own way and didn’t let the shackles of sexism or gender roles stop you. You were and always will be one of the pivotal experts in ophthalmology. The most important reason for this is because of the fierce love you had for your patients. As Mozart said “ Love is the soul of genius" Incredible wife, the most loyal friend to everyone and the most compassionate soul possible. People constantly have noted that you always made them feel like the most important person in the room, regardless of age, education, occupation or any other type of status. Of course you were brilliant. You were talented in so many ways. But what made you you was your love, and it will always be what makes you my Mommy, forever.

Sunny noses, butterfly kisses, and baking while I’m sneaking your cookie dough, forever in my memories. The world is a kinder and better place because you were in it and your unconditional love will shape me always. I hope this enormous hole in my heart can eventually be filled with all our good times, and that I will feel you in the rays of the sun, the break of the waves, and the violet hydrangeas that were always your favorite.

In the words of Mozart “Neither a lofty degree of intelligence, nor imagination nor both together, go to the making of genius. Love, love, love, that is the soul of genius.”

Mom, you were, and always will be, my genius of love.

Love always and forever,

Julie

My deepest condolences to Jane's family and friends. I recently met her in the neighborhood through our dogs. We started walking them together and had a wonderful time. She was kind enough to give me a copy of her wonderful cookbook. I will think of her while walking dogs and cooking--both of which were enhanced for me because of her. I will miss Jane greatly, though we only knew each other for a short time.
