Alan Scott Obituary

Dr. Alan Scott, PhD, was born in London, England on December 6, 1931. He was one of three boys born to Edward and Eva Scott. Alan's childhood memories consist of playing tennis on clay courts, and playing soccer in the local league. He had a passion for soccer his entire life. After moving to Athens, Georgia in 1965, he help to start a youth league.

At age 10, during Germany's Blitz on London, Alan joined the Air Scouts and learned to ID English planes and the Luftwaffe by their engine sounds. After a bomb was dropped on his family's London home the family went to stay with relatives in Devonshire.

When he was 18, Alan developed appendicitis and required an appendectomy. His nurse, a Hungarian immigrant, would become his wife. They were married in 1954. Alan earned his PhD in Nuclear Physics from Queens College, London. In 1957 the Scott family, including two-year-old Fiona, emigrated to the United States where Alan had accepted a post doctorate teaching and research position at UCLA.

While in California, Alan, Eva and Fiona became U.S. citizens.

After a few years Alan accepted a position at the University of Minnesota. Their expanding family now included Anita, their second daughter, who is an American citizen by birth.

In 1965 Alan accepted an associate professor position at the University of Georgia, Athens. The family members reveled in the culture in Georgia and made many friends. Alan would do research during the summers. With family in tow he would go to Oakridge, TN. Or when he had a National Science Foundation Grant he would take the family to Los Alamos, NM to do research.

His research took him out of the country as well, so he and the family would travel to France, Switzerland, and Germany.

Alan retired in 1996 as a professor emeritus from UGA after 30 years of teaching and research for the University.

Alan died on his 85th birthday, December 6, 2016. He was preceded by his wife Eva, who passed away in August 2016. He is survived by his daughter Fiona and her husband Michael, who live in Savannah and by his daughter Anita, a VA physician who lives in Hawaii.

The service for Alan will be held at 2:00 p.m. March 18 at Lord and Stephens Funeral Home, 4355 Lexington Road, Athens.

So sorry to hear of Dr Scott´s passing. I will fondly remember my many trips with him to Oak Ridge and Indiana University collecting data for his research and my Master´s thesis. I learned so much more than physics on those trips. I will be forever grateful for the 4 years I spent with him at UGA and the guidance I received. A part of him lives on in me and hopefully in people I have influenced in my life.

Just heard of Alan and Eva's sad demise. Both Alan and I were students at Acton County School, London, England. Alan was top of the class in Physics and German as well as being a top all round sportsman. He won a place at University College London to read Physics which led to his Ph.D and a life long interest and expertise in nuclear Physics.
I enjoyed meeting Alan and Eva from time to time in England and Georgia. I will really miss Alan's very long Christmas phone calls, his humor, and our shared memories of School days.
My sincere condolences to Fiona and Anita.
Both Alan and Eva will be sadly missed

Dear Fiona,
My condolences on hearing of the passing of both your mother and father in 2016. So many happy memories of get-togethers, parties, lunches and dinners on Ponderosa Drive! All the furniture would be moved in the den for the festivities and dancing, of which your lovely mom would take an active role, right there with us teenagers, almost 20, you know... Your mother and father were always engaging and fun. Often times Dr. Alan might drift into "some mathematical formula trance" and Eva would immediately stop him in his tracks with, "Alan, stop with this theory nonsense this instant, noone here is interested in your formula, we are here to eat and dance and have fun!" With a chuckle we all moved along enjoying all of your hospitality.

The happy memories of these wonderful people will live on in the hearts of us all.

This was a very good man with a great sense of fairness and honor. He taught me much about the game of soccer as he "ref"ed several of my games. My thoughts a prayers are with his wonderful family during this time of loss. Thank you Dr. Scott.
