Scott Woodside Obituary

LTC Scott Pheil Woodside, 78, U.S. Army (Ret.), died Sunday, November 16, 2003, at St. Josephs Hospital. He was born in St. Petersburg, Fla., and moved to Savannah in 1966. He retired from the U.S. Army Reserve with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, after 23 years of service, September 6, 1985. He was a retired Sales Manager for Allstate Insurance Company. He was a member of the Retired Officers Assn. He played golf with a group from Southbridge, enjoyed fishing and cooking. Mr. Woodside was a communicant of St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, where he formerly served as a vestryman, senior warden and junior warden. He was a woodcarver by hobby and carved several beautiful appointments for St. Michaels Church -- the door on the ambry, three figures on the chapel altar, now moved into the church, and the Stations of the Cross. The Stations are regarded as magnificent artistic pieces, all fourteen of them, which he did one at a time and not in any particular sequence. For each member of the church who has had a home blessed, he donated a carved fish. Woodcarving, he said, came naturally. He didnt begin it until he was 40 years old, never had a lesson, nor did he collect any money for the many carvings he did. Preceding him in death were his former wife of 45 years, Elizabeth "Betty" Newberry Woodside; his parents, Byron J. Woodside and Maud C. Pheil Woodside, and a brother, William Woodside. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ellen Hurst Woodside of Savannah; two sons, Scott and Cyndy Pheil Woodside Jr. of Roswell, and Wayne David Woodside of Savannah; three stepsons, James Francis Robertson Jr., John Stewart Robertson and Jackson Hurst (Connie Hendrix) Robertson, all of Savannah; a stepdaughter, Therese Ellen Robertson of Savannah; a brother and sister-in-law, Byron J. and Aleta Woodside of Brooksville, Fla.; four grandchildren, Staci and Peter W. Cullinan, Stefani Woodside, Iain Woodside and Trevor Scott Woodside; two stepgrandchildren, Jackson Hurst Robertson Jr. and Connor Lamar Robertson; a special friend, Dr. Patrick Evans, and a number of nieces and nephews. Visitation: 6:00 - 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, at Hubert C. Baker Funeral Home Hodgson Memorial Chapel. Funeral Services: 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, with Father Scotty Brock officiating. Private Interment will be in the U.S. National Cemetery at Beaufort, S.C.
