Arthur Beren Obituary

Arthur Beren
February 7, 1925 - June 29, 2023
Bay Area shoe mogul, Arthur Beren, passed away peacefully at his Oakland home June 29, 2023 at age 98 after a brief illness. Arthur was born in Regina, Saskatchewan on February 7, 1925. After serving in the Royal Canadian Navy during WWII, he arrived in California in 1946 to study Ophthalmology at UC Berkeley. He joined the fraternity Alpha Epsilon Pi where he made many lifelong friends. Soon thereafter, he met the love of his life, Rosalie Wallis, and they were married in 1948. Arthur began working as a part-time salesman at Kushins shoe store in downtown Oakland. Thus began his lifelong passion for shoes. He became part owner of Kushins, which grew to 28 stores under his direction. Arthur sold Kushins in 1984, and in 1985 he opened Arthur Beren Shoes in Union Square, San Francisco. His store became one of the most successful independent retail shoe stores in the world. Arthur loved the shoe business and all of his many employees and colleagues throughout the industry. He was also a fervent Bay Area sports fan and spent many hours at the Oakland Coliseum. Arthur is preceded in death by his wife, Rosalie Wallis Beren, and brothers Isador and Jack Berenbaum. He is survived by brother, Harvey Berenbaum and sister Rosalind King, three children, David (Susan), Rick (Carole) and Anne, four grandchildren, Nicole, Ryan (Renee), Emma and Lily, and three great-grandchildren, Roxie, Remi and Harrison. A private service was held at Home of Eternity Jewish Cemetery.

I had the pleasure of working for Mr. Beren, starting at the Oakland store! Also worked at El Cerrito, and then I chose to come to Salinas where I´ve come to call home!

I can still remember Mr. Baren coming into the store, getting on the landline, carrying on a conversation, but keeping an eye on the floor!

He was a class act! Thanks for the memories Mr. Beren......

I am so sorry for the loss of this icon. I met Arthur on a flight back from southern California several years ago. He was there visiting a sick friend. Arthur was one of the kindest, most authentic people I have ever met. He was so warm and sincere and had not pretension in spite of his great success. He warmly invited me to come to Arthur Beren shoes sometime and his passion for this family business was palpable. I am grateful to have made his acquintence. Love and prayers to his family.

David, Ann, and Rick,
I just saw this obituary and learned that your Dad had passed in June. I wanted to inform him that my mom, Doris Reiner, passed yesterday. She too, will be at Home of Eternity. You may remember that our parents were life long friends, having met at Berkeley. Your parents were always my favorites of all of my parents' friends
Your dad spoke so eloquently at my Dad's funeral in 1999 (Bill Reiner). The love that he had for your mother was an inspiration. Now they are together again
Sending love,
Susan (Reiner) Silverman

Dear David, Rick, and Anne,
I am deeply sorry for the loss of your father. He was an exceptional boss, always kind, thoughtful, and a true gentleman. Whenever someone asks me what makes a good supervisor, I think of him. May he rest in peace.
