Teong Wong Obituary

Teong Wong
07/22/1936 - 04/18/2024
Teong "Ted" Soon Wong passed away April 18, 2024, (87). A lifelong San Franciscan native, he was the brother to Fawn (Florence), Ging (Ken), Yin (Bobby), Han (Jimmy), Dut (Ed), Fay, Dick, Dewey, Wing, and Dave; and uncle to many nieces and nephews. Losing his mother at a young age, having such a large family and growing up in his father's laundry business made for a challenging childhood.
Ted grew up in the Mission District and graduated from Mission HS. He also attended St. Mary's Chinese School. He went on to receive a bachelor's degree from San Francisco State University.
He was a lifelong educator, identifying himself as a "public school teacher." He loved and taught science, math, and computers. His students knew him as "T. Wong" at James Lick, Marina, and Galileo.
Ted was proud to be a Chinese American and advocate for his community. He was one of the founders of TACT, The Association of Chinese Teachers, was active with the Chinese Historical Society of America and participated in many community organizations. He firmly believed that Chinese Americans should identify with the struggles and successes of their community.
Ted enjoyed photography, family genealogy, the Cantonese language, Chinese and Japanese music, reading books and travel (in person and virtually).
Ted was a well-spoken, thoughtful, generous person. He will be missed dearly.
Burial will be private. Donations may be made to the CHSA, Chinese Historical Society of America or TACT, The Association of Chinese Teachers.
