Rep. Marion G. "Gene" Snyder

Marion Snyder Obituary

Former Rep. Marion G. "Gene" Snyder, a veteran of 11 terms in Congress, has died at age 79.

The Kentucky Republican died late Friday in Naples, Fla., according to family friend Joe Whittle, a former U.S. attorney who was with Snyder's family in Florida.

"Kentucky lost a good friend," Whittle said. "He brought a lot of improvements. He loved Kentucky. He was a great statesman." Snyder was first elected in 1962 from Kentucky's 3rd District but lost a re-election bid.

He ran again in 1966 in the 4th District and held the seat for the next two decades. He was succeeded by Jim Bunning, who is now a U.S. senator.

Snyder attend the University of Louisville and earned his law degree from the Jefferson School of Law. He began his political career as the Jeffersontown city attorney in 1954, a post he held for four years.

An expressway and the federal courthouse in Louisville are named for Snyder.

I cannot tell you how sad I was to learn of Congressman Snyder's passing and how sorry I am that it took this long for me to find out. I had the privilege of working in Mr. Snyder's DC office from 1979 until his retirement from the House of Representatives at the end of 1986. He was a terrific boss who genuinely cared for Kentucky and his constituency. I consider myself fortunate to have known Mr. Snyder and to have had the opportunity to work for him and the good people of Kentucky's Fourth Congressional District.

Mr. Snyder will always hold a special place in my heart. In 1968, when my father passed away suddenly, Mr. Snyder helped get my brother home from Vietnam as quickly as possible. As a teenage girl, who was so very upset at the loss of my father, getting my brother home meant more to me than I can say. I will never forget what he did for my family. May you feel God's loving hand on your shoulder as he guides you through this difficult time.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

In 1968, I was looking forward to my trip to England and Scotland as an exchange student. A few days before I was to leave, I foolishly had my passport in my purse when it was stolen. I was sure my dream was over. My grandmother, who was a Republican Precinct Captain, contacted Gene Snyder. My replacement passport arrived in plenty of time, along with a telegram from Mr. Snyder, wishing me a wonderful trip. Please accept my heartfelt condolences.

Gene spoke at my police recruit class graduation in 1969 for the old Jefferson County Police Department. He brought good things to the people of Kentucky and we should all remember that! He spoke his piece and stood behind it too!! I needed his help once and he offered it. A man of his word!

I shall never forget Rep. Snyder because in October 1969 my parents called upon Representive Snyder to find out if I was aboard an aircraft which had crashed in the Gulf of Tonkin when I was bound for the USS Constellation during the Vietnam War. Two groups were sent to the Constellation from Subic Bay; one bound directly to the "Connie" and the other to board her in Sasabo, Japan. Fortunatly, I was on an aircraft bound for Japan. The other aircraft crashed in the Tonkin Gulf killing everyone onboard. My parents, who knew that I was to be sent that day to the ship, called the congressman and he went out of his way to find out if I had been a casualty. Thanks to him, their minds were set at ease.

I'm saddened to hear of Rep. Snyder's passing. Sometime around the early 1980's while I was in high school, my parents were having an "open house showing" of a condominium that an elderly relative was selling. The Congressman came by with his mother to see the condo. I remember thinking..."I know that guy...where do I know him from???" And then it dawned on me...and for some reason I had the gumption to look out the window and my hunch was confirmed by the government plates on his car! My Mom was completely clueless...didn't recognize him at all, until I pulled her aside and told her.(We still get a chuckle out of that.) He sent me a sweet note and photograph, that I still have, shortly after that. How blessed we would be if more like him were serving today. My most heartfelt condolences to all of his loved ones.

Gene was a great congressman and a gentleman. He once said, "Some people call this pork....I call it bringing home the bacon."He was referring to the dedication of the then Jefferson Freeway. He had a great staff. Once they got me a
passport and visa in 4 days. They took care of his constituents. He paved the way for the rest of us.
He nominated me to the United States Military Academy. Of course, behind every great man, there is a great woman. Pat fulfilled that role with grace.
