I remember when my first year in College, I encounter the word Fortran many times in various topics of my Computer Science studies.
But I've just been enlightened by this article that He (Backus) is the same person that invented particular grammar of computer languages known as Backus-Naur Form.
Backus is a genius person indeed...

I just found out about John's death after a few e-mails had come back and I got concerned. Looking at the date, it must have been a short time after I visited him and had a meal with him in Ashland perhaps at the end of 06. I didn't even know he was sick. He was a great friend of mine, and we went through a period of mutual support as he was grieving his wife and I was grieving other losses. Sending love to him and to family. xx Katie Darling

May you find strength from God to deal with your loss. I would like to share a scripture of comfort with the family at John 6:40 "For this is the will of my Father, that everyone that beholds the Son and exercises faith in him should have everlasting life, and I will resurrect him at the last day."

Although I enjoyed the many tasks and projects I was privileged to be involved in during the 30+ years I worked in the computer industry, none ever brought me the satisfaction as the many programs and systems I completed in FORTRAN. Your impact on the industry and on the individuals in it is heartwarming and huge. Yvonna Douglas Edmond, OK

Thank you for developing FORTRAN. It was the first programming language I learned.
I helped a student complete a report about you on last year.
