Even this late date, the memories remain for Maria Lauterbach and her infant.

A member of our armed forces, to give of herself as she did, and to be left to die as she was, is a heartbreak to everyone who had known her, and even for us, who never had the pleasure.

She was a hero before her time, and a loss to all who knew her.

May her memories brings some comfort to those who knew and loved her, and the loss we all share, even though, some of us, never had the pleasure.

May her family that she left behind, find comfort in all that she was, and in her memory, if only to know, how many of us, deeply care and miss her too.

Maria,
i know that you are being guided by the angels along with your son. i was remembering of when we were in bootcamp, and how we use to stay up after lights were out and talk about all the things we wanted to do after we left the island. our love for soccer and what not. i remember when you had really long pretty hair and one day you walked into the squadbay and you had chopped it off. i use to make fun of you because i said you looked like chipera, & you use to punch me in the leg. just know that you are missed and are in my prayers. Faulkner misses you too. We were both in Iraq together when we found out. We miss and love you!!

In a way we have all lost a little when we lost Maria. As a husband of a fore female and the father of a currently serving female service member, our lady GIs have a special place in my heart. May the Lord give you strength, rest peace and courage to carry on in life?

I was proud to be a member of the choir for Maria's funeral Mass. I did not know Maria personally, just her mother. Her sisters were both obviously sorrowing but did beautiful readings. I hope the full military funeral gave the proper dignity to Maria and brought comfort to her family. It was an uplifting experience. Your family is daily in my prayers.

This was at the candlelight ceremony for Maria and Gabriel.
