Larry Miller Obituary
Miller was at home with his family when he passed away around 4 p.m.
Miller had a heart attack in June 2008, then spent nearly two months in the hospital for complications from diabetes. He was in a wheelchair after his release from the hospital and his medical problems continued, leading to the amputation of his legs six inches below the knee in January.
"He did everything he could to stay here, but it wasn't to be," said Gail Miller, Larry's widow.
The Millers' five children, their families and friends packed a room at the Jazz practice facility Friday night for an emotional news conference, which included several lighthearted moments with memories from Miller's life right up until the final days.
Gail Miller said she got to tell her husband Thursday night that the Jazz had just beaten the NBA champion Boston Celtics, 90-85.
"He went peacefully. He was prepared. We were prepared," she said.
Greg Miller, who took over the family business last summer, said doctors told his father last week that his condition was terminal because of a rare complication that prevented oxygen from reaching tissue throughout his body.
"Prior to that announcement, he had every intention of beating this and getting back to a normal lifestyle," he said.
A tireless worker, Miller started his career in an auto parts shop, then built a car dealership empire that made him one of Utah's most recognized and influential people. Miller expanded his realm in 1985 when he bought a 50 percent share of the Jazz as the team appeared on the verge of moving to Miami.
Miller bought the rest of the team a year later, declining an offer that would have sent the team to Minnesota, and the team in the smallest media market in the NBA flourished. The Jazz made consecutive appearances in the NBA finals in 1997 and 1998.
"Every citizen in our state feels a little empty today," Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman said in a statement. "Larry was Utah and Utah was Larry. He inspired many and served countless. We all have been made better by his extraordinary life."
Miller had the good fortune to buy a team that had three of the longest tenures in league history: John Stockton, Karl Malone and coach Jerry Sloan. Stockton, the NBA's career leader in assists and steals, played all 19 of his seasons for the Jazz, 18 of them dishing the ball off to Malone as he scored the second-most points in NBA history.
"Personally, I have lost a valuable friend. Larry has been such a remarkable individual," Stockton said in a statement. "He is someone we will all miss."
Malone, a two-time league MVP, was with the Jazz for 18 seasons in his 19-year career. Sloan still holds the coaching job he started in 1988.
Around the time Miller bought the Jazz, the team set a goal to sell 10,000 season tickets in the Salt Palace, the team's tiny home arena after it moved from New Orleans. Six years later, the Jazz were playing in a brand new building that held 19,100 and filled up as the team got better.
And Miller was sitting in his courtside seat, wearing khakis, a golf shirt and tennis shoes, for nearly every game, giving his players and fans an unobstructed view into his emotions.
"The NBA lost a great leader, colleague and friend today," commissioner David Stern said in a statement. "We will miss him."
The Jazz planned to show a short video tribute and hold a moment of silence before Saturday's home game against New Orleans.
Miller didn't have the reputation of owners like George Steinbrenner or Mark Cuban, but was very hands-on with his team. When he wasn't happy with the Jazz's performance, he was known to stand behind the bench, silently glaring at the players and sometimes punctuating his point with a locker room tirade. Miller got so frustrated early in the 2005-06 season that he skipped eight games.
He also had a lighter side, which showed when he donned an old-fashioned Jazz uniform for a game in 2004 when the team was celebrating its 25th season in Utah. The short shorts and jersey were a snug fit on the portly owner, who completed the late '70s ensemble with purple wrist bands and walked onto the court after introductions as if he were going to take the opening tip.
Miller's ownership years also included some turmoil, most notably with the always vocal Malone. One of the top players in NBA history, Malone wasn't quite untouchable when Miller felt the power forward was saying things in the wrong place or at the wrong time.
Their public spats during Malone's time with the Jazz included hints he may want to be traded or threats to leave as a free agent. One of their last clashes came late in the 2002-03 season, when Malone was near the end of his contract and suggested publicly that the Jazz may have wanted the 39-year-old to move on.
"I've put up with them. I'm not going to put up with them now. If he wants to get into a (public shouting) contest, let's go," Miller said before a game in April 2003. "To throw disruptive hand grenades is not right. It's not fair to his teammates. It's not fair to the coaches. It's not fair to the franchise. It's not fair to me."
The clashes of fiercely strong personalities always ended with Miller and Malone simmering down, then talking out the problem. When Malone finally ended his career in Utah by signing a free-agent deal with the Lakers, Miller tearfully wished him well.
There was never any doubt Miller would retire Malone's No. 32, which the Jazz did in 2006, and Miller added to his legacy with a bronze statue of Malone that stands next to Stockton's outside the arena.
After Stockton retired and Malone left for the Lakers, many speculated the team from the obscure state with the funny liquor laws wouldn't last without its marquee players. Miller was never among the skeptics and a few years later shook his reputation for being tight with money by paying big in free agency.
The Jazz signed Carlos Boozer and Mehmet Okur in 2004, then a year later drafted point guard Deron Williams to set a new foundation that had Utah back in the playoffs in 2007.

I never had the chance to let you know how sorry I was that Larry had passed away. I remember Larry a little bit at West. I would like to offer my heart felt condolences. I know it's 8 years late, but I am truly sorry. I know that the grief never ends. I lost my husband, Leonard on Oct 17, 2008 in a rollover.. Dear Gail and Larry's Family:
I was a young 24 year old man in 1976 and a player with Denver Broncos when I decided to call Stevenson Toyota in Denver to see if they were interested in establishing a relationship where they would give me a Toyota car to drive during the season in exchage for appearances and use of some of my game tickets, an arrangement many players had with area dealers. They transfered my call to their young GM and he was open to the idea and asked me to come in and talk with him. The young GM was Larry Miller. We became good friends over the next 2 years. In 1977-78, our team became known as the Denver Crush, we were the AFC Champions, and we played in Superbowl XII. Larry loved the exciment as much as the players did. One day he called and told me to bring my temporary car and he exchanged it with an burnt orange Toyota sports car (just for the fun of being part of the orange mania). I remember Larry being very energetic, hard working and we enjoyed our relationship. After we met, he entered into the same relationship with another player or two. I remember Larry inviting me to his home to have dinner with Gail and his young family. When he learned that I had an interest in commercial real estate, he introduced me to a few people he knew to help me learn about the business. In 1979, I left professional football and moved away from Denver to start the next phase of my life and we lost touch with each other over time.
One day in approximately 1995, while driving to lunch near my office in Morro Bay, CA, I noticed a license plate with the dealer label - "Larry Miller, Salt Lake City..." I smiled and wondered if that could be the same Larry Miller that I knew in Denver 18 years earlier. For the fun of it, I decided to call that dealership in Salt Lake City. I believe they transferred my telephone call to something like "Larry Miller Productions" and I smiled, wondering what new worlds he had ventured into. I left a message and later recieved a call from Larry. I smiled, laughed and congratulated him as our conversation revealed that he went on to acquire and own numerous auto dealerships and he was also the owner of the Utah Jazz. I should have known.
Today is Easter Sunday, April 8, 2012 and I woke up with the thought of going on line to find and read Larry's obituary and I'm glad that I found this "Guest Book" - I hope that Gail or her children someday read my story of Larry. I knew him when he was a young GM for a single dealership and he was tirelessly working his way up. He enriched my life. Larry, this morning, I'm thinking of you and your family. You were some kind of man - hard working and passionate. You certainly did your part to make this world a better place. Thank you.

To the family of Larry Miller,
Larry has a great legacy he's left behind to his family and the community. He brought many things to our community that may not otherwise have come to pass if Larry hadn't lived out his ideas and dreams. Although he was a man of great wealth, he never flaunted it particularly by the way he dressed. It just wasn't his style to stand out in a crowd but to blend in with everyone. I respect him greatly for that. It was refreshing to see a person in his position use his talents and money to invest in the community he lived in as well as mankind in general.
I admired him greatly for the interst he had in furthering education in our state by providing educational opportunities for teachers and students. My daughter was a recipient of The Foundation of Liberty Seminar and she raves about her experience to this day and is very grateful that he would do this for the teachers.
Larry, thank you for not only showing Utah but the world what an exemplary man you were and for making this world a better place to live in and providing the different types of entertainment for all to enjoy by making dreams come true.

Dear Miller Family,
My thoughts and prayers are with you. Though I never personally met Larry, I admired his conviction and strength through the past months to try to overcome this debilitating disease of Diabetes. Also, I purchased my first of 2 Toyota Corollas from Larry's Murray location back in 1982 and drove it for 10 years, then bought another Corolla in 1994 which I am still driving. Larry has left such a legacy and is admired by the thousands through-out the world.
May God Bless each and every one of you as you go forward to continue the great work and deeds that Larry started.

Dear Gail, Greg and Family, I extend my heartfeld sympathy and condolences at the loss of your husband and father. I have admired Larry's devotion to family, church, community, and business for years and know he did many things behind the public scene to help many people and organizations with his expertise and generosity. I remmember the first time our families became aquainted was when we both lived in the same ward in Littleton, Colorado. Shortly after your move to Utah we also made a move to Utah and were able to renew our friendship. I remmember one thing that impressed me about Larry was the commitment spiritually that put his life on tract to begin his fulfilling his goals for his life. His impact on sports in Utah is legendary. But for me it was his caring for others that I'll always remmember. I know I'll miss his presence in our lives. Gail, may you and yours have the Love and Peace of our Savior with you always and especially at this time of bereavement.

I have grieved over the passing of Larry H. Miller because he has left a big print on Salt Lake and that print was not a selfish one. Rather, he left a legacy of caring, kindness, service, achievement with dedication, and a loving family. People all over the state and world have been affected by Larry's businesses, Jazz, cars, cars, cars, and his tears. Yes, his tears. He endeared himself to us all. What a treasure he has been to us through the years. We will miss, miss, miss him. I send my wholehearted sympathy and love to those who remain, including the entire community, all of whom are in mourning for the man who cared enough to go out on Christmas Eve with his son to get people out of snowdrifts, just to be helpful. The man who bought up all the remaining trees at "Festival of Trees" AND THEN donated them to whomever needed them to lift spirts of children, or organizatgions. He left a footprint as big as old Lake Bonneville. My wish is for continued success of integrity in the Larry H. Miller success story. May it continue to be strong and emulate his wishes.

I never got to meet Larry, but always wanted to. I haven't had my car to drive, due to mechanical problems, for over a year. Being on disability, I can't afford to get it fixed. I told my Bishop, 'I bet if I could meet Larry H. Miller, he'd help me fix it'
Everyone in the state of Utah, even without the pleasure of meeting him, felt like he was our friend. He has set an example for all of us to follow, even from heaven. He has a smile that makes us smile. He deserved everyones respect and admiration, a giant among men. My daughter is there on the other side with him. She'll have him laughing in no time!!!
My prayers and love to your family. I wish I could have had the pleasure of shaking a man like that's hand. A man of God.

We never met Larry Miller in person, but he still had a great inpact on our lives and other Utah citizens. We like others feel that "We know this Guy"! He did so much for others and will be missed. Thank you so much for sharing Larry with us. My dad worked closely with him over the past 30 years. His loyalty spoke volumes for the type of man Larry was. Our family would be so different had it not been for Larry and your entire family. Some of my fondest memories are of watching the Jazz games as a family. When Stockton sunk the 3 pointer to send us to the finals, we were all hugging and jumping up and down, which actually caused us to question the stability of our family room floor. The excitement was uncontainable so we ran outside and greeted many of our neighbors doing the same thing. I know Larry did so many acts of kindness that were never publicized, always giving back to those around him, offering a job to someone down on their luck. Larry was bigger than life, yet so approachable. I think that is why I am having such a hard time imaging life without Larry. I have admired your family, how you have handled such a difficult time, yet letting us share it with you. We know the spirit of Larry will live on. As we have talked about his passing with family, friends and co-workers, the overwhelming feeling is that he inspired us all to do better, to do more good in this world.

Larry has been an inspiration to many, and he continues to be. I wanted to share an example of this. I work at Davis Hospital and Medical Center as a dietitian/diabetes educator. Many of my patients have followed Larry's story closely, and his openness about his struggle with diabetes has inspired them to take the time to invest in their own health. Several of my patients have shed tears with me over his passing this past week. We have discussed the life lessons to be learned from Larry's struggle. I so appreciate his candid honesty about the difficulty of taking time for self-care and sharing this openly. Two years ago this week I had the unpleasant experience of diagnosing my own son with type 1 diabetes, and we have come to experience the struggles of the disease at our home as well. My son is a huge Jazz fan and follows any story about Larry avidly. After viewing a particularly touching tribute, he told me that he is going to work harder than ever at keeping healthy and managing his diabetes. Larry has impacted him in a way that I cannot (for I am his mother and therefore cannot possibly know much of anything!). I am so grateful to Larry for his example, his giving nature, his blunt communication style and his humbleness in acknowledging his successes and weaknesses. He has inspired my son, my patients, and myself to do better. He has truly followed President Hinckley's counsel to leave the world a better place than you found it. We will miss him! Thank you for sharing him with all of us.

It was there our father meet and talked to your father several times. It was something our father never forgot, he was so honored to have been a part of. I had the good fortune of working for a few of your Dealerships and with your son Greg. Those have been some of the greatest years of my life so far. Greg has extremely large shoes to fill but I know he can do it. Working with Greg taught me a lot and I admire him greatly. I grew up in Salt Lake and once had the pleasure of listening to Larry talk at a church fireside. I was so imppressed as a young man to see the humilty and down to earth manner he had. Larry made this world a better place... But never became "Of this world." He was an old school, straight forward guy. He stood for what he belived in.. Which isn't a popular thing in this day.. I think maybe the best thing he left Utah and everyone... might have been his example... My prayers go out to the the Miller family. Thank you for sharing Larry's time, for all he did for us... And for what its worth.. I live in LA now and cheer for the Jazz at every Lakers game...

I always looked forward to Larry's insight on life and business on various sports talk shows...specifically when he was doing the fab 5 at 5. I could sense his sincerity and honesty in those interviews which led to a great deal of respect for him. I'm very sorry for your loss. He will be missed!

To Gail and Steve Miller and The Rest of the miller Family from a member of one of Utahs Ford and Dodge Dealers, and son of one who Steve knew personally and did business with on occasion with, I would express my thoughts about the guy who did the most good to benefit in his own quiet humble way to benefit the people of Salt Lake and all of Utah, I would hope in some way that Larry's Family will and can find some peace knowing that he is at peace and that he does not have to suffer anymore that he could die knowing that his beloved Jazz won their game with Boston, what fitting way for a avid jazz fan could have before dying this was gone, despite all his wealth he and Gail could of have acquired and maybe had they wisely and unselfishly put in good use and in some way returned it and invested it back into the community and into something that could do the most or could benefit the community for the best good, he was a very quiet and unassumely man, he was like what Teddy Roosevelt once said "Walk And Talk Sofely but Carry a Big Stick" in this case instead of the big stick, what he could somewhat do to benefit the most good for the community or some organization or customer in one of his variously dealership and lived up the slogan and truely exmpfied his slogan "After All You Know This Guy",

Our deepest sympathy and our thoughts and prayers are with all of you. We wanted to take a moment to share with you all, what an inspiration Larry has been to our whole family. I started working for the group at just 17 years old. 15 years later I am still here. Through all of the years, I have learned and grown with this company and have never been so proud to be a part of it.
It was also through the group that I met my husband. We have been married 11 years and have 3 beautiful girls. My girls have come to know how special the Larry H Miller Group is because that is where their Mom and Dad both work. We Thank you for all of the wonderful benefits we receive from working for your company. We know how extremely lucky we are to be part of this great group.
My oldest daughter is 15 now. College is just around the corner for her. She is already making big plans for her future. None of this would even be a possibility if it wasn't for Larry's huge generosity. We have talked with all three of our girls about how Larry's scholarship program is going to help us pay for their bright futures.

My deepest condolences go out to all of you. I feel inspired to tell you, that Larry is in a great place, and is very happy where he is; and that he loves and misses you dearly. You are in my prayers & my heart goes out to all of you. The only time I was able to talk with your husband,father & grandfather. Was at the LHM Campus outside on a very cold winter night. The 15 minutes he shared with me was unbelivable, of course the topic was the JAZZ. I attended West High School with Larry, and my younger sister was in his graduating class. One day my sister remained after class to talk to a much-loved English teacher at West, Mrs. Mills. They were the only two in the room when Larry poked his head through the door, said hi to my sister, who was a friend, and asked Mrs. Mills a question. After he left, Mrs. Mills turned to my sister and said, "If that young man ever discovers who he really is, there will be no way to stop him or his accomplishments." I have worked for Larry Miller Hyundai now for over 4 months and in the auto industry for over 18 years. I can honestly say I have never heard a bad word said about him. When I tell my friends and family about the scholarship fund they are astonished. I was in my favorite restaruant and Mr and Mrs Miller were having dinner. A young boy walked up and wanted Larrys autograph. He took a few minutes to talk to the young man and ask about his interests. I will always remember his example of living a Christ like life. Even though I never met Larry I feel as though I have lost a friend. He was such an example to me of how a person should treat others. I loved his drive for life and his keep going attitude.

I only got 2 meet Larry a couple of times (when I was a kid). I grew up with the Utah Jazz and Larry Miller. He was like a part of my family, we learned all about him thru my grandparents. You could not be a part of our family and not know about Larry. I am so truely sorry to see him go and I hope that in time you all will be able to have some sort of closer on this. I do know that he is in a better place and that he does not like to see people sad or crying and I agree that he does not want you to cry at the funeral. I have fond memories of Larry. We were school mates and teammates in Little League. My Grandpa Tucker was our coach and he had a great impact on all of us. I often ran into Larry and he would always tell me how much he loved those days. I am so sorry for your loss, but I know that Larry has much to do on the other side. Good people are needed in heaven too. He will continue his efforts with those souls that need teaching in heaven. Dear Gail and family,
It was shortly after you and Larry came to Utah after purchasing the Murray store that I had the opportunity to come to work for your wonderful husband, father and grandfather. I appreciate the things I learned from Larry: striving for excellence, caring about people, working hard, enjoying your job. Larry trusted me with some pretty important responsibilities even though I was quite young and that meant a lot to me. I considered him as something of a mentor to me and he would often take time to personally coach me on one thing or another. Even after I left the Toyota store to go back and complete my education, I was always interested in how Larry was doing. Though I was only one of the thousands of people Larry had worked with over the years, I always felt that if I had the opportunity to see him again, he would remember me and we would be able to visit together as if we’d stayed friends forever. That’s why I, and many others, have felt Larry’s passing in a personal way. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you all. God bless you for raising such a great husband, father and grandfather and good luck to Greg as he assumes the big responsibility of carrying on the Larry H. Miller tradition.

Larry H. Miller left his mark on Utah. Because of his time, dedication, love and financial assistance, he brought about many positive changes here in Utah. No, I did not know this guy personally; but I knew his father Mr. Frank Miller and I know his mother and siblings.
Larry was indeed a self made man. He learned the ropes from the bottom up. He also helped a friend of mine in a very selfless way.
I pay tribute to his parents for raising Larry in an old family home with much love. I don't think he could have achieved as much as he did without his parents wisdom and support.

Gene and I have many good memories of Larry. He and Gene served in the Teachers Quorum and enjoyed many activities together. We remember when Larry and Gail picked us up and took us on a hard-hat tour in the golf cart of the Delta Center before it was completed.
