Michael Davidson Obituary
Officials at Brigham and Women's Hospital said Dr. Michael J. Davidson, director of endovascular cardiac surgery, died late Tuesday after being shot around 11 a.m.
"Dr. Davidson was a wonderful and inspiring cardiac surgeon who devoted his career to saving lives and improving the quality of life of every patient he cared for," said a statement issued by the hospital, which is affiliated with Harvard Medical School. "It is truly devastating that his own life was taken in this horrible manner."
The hospital's logo flag was lowered to half-staff during a Wednesday morning ceremony to honor Davidson.
Police said Stephen Pasceri, 55, entered the hospital Tuesday morning and specifically requested the doctor.
Pasceri, of Millbury, shot the doctor twice just outside an examination room on the second floor of the Carl J. and Ruth Shapiro Cardiovascular Center; he then turned the gun on himself, police said.
Boston Police Commissioner William Evans said officers conducting a room-by-room search found the gunman dead in an exam room with the weapon.
Police said Pasceri wasn't a patient of the doctor's and they didn't specify a motive for the shootings.
Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh said he was "deeply saddened" by Davidson's death. "This tragedy is the result of a senseless act of violence that has no place in our City," he said in a statement early Wednesday.
Evans said earlier Tuesday that police were talking to witnesses, "but it's leading us to believe there was something in the past that upset this guy, that made him go in and look for this particular doctor."
Police and hospital officials commended the fast response by police and hospital staff, who they said had been trained to respond to an "active shooter" situation.
Evans said police were on the scene within seconds after getting the first calls of shots fired and had the area secured within 15 minutes.
Betsy Nabel, the hospital's president, said Brigham and Women's will evaluate its safety protocols. She said there have been no discussions about installing metal detectors, which none of the city's hospitals have.

Around this time every year, I remember the story behind this tragedy. I did not know Dr. Davidson but somehow he and his family are still in my mind with every January 20th that comes and goes. I pray for steadfast peace and joy for his family, that it would break through the pain and despair of their tragic loss. You are remembered, Dr. Davidson and I'm so sorry your life was taken at the young age of 44. It sounds like you were an amazing doctor and person in general. I did not know Dr. Davidson personally but many of my friends did as we trained in Boston hospitals around the same time. We are also both surgeons with a love for the balance that music can bring to one's life. One year on it still angers, saddens and humbles me to know that such a dedicated physician whose life's purpose was helping others fell victim in part to one deranged individual's anger and in part to a system that has failed Americans in so many ways: failed to set reasonable expectations of what medical/surgical care can and can not promise; failed to provide a safe mechanism for doctors and patients to communicate openly without fear of reprisal when complications of surgery occur (and they occur in the most skilled of hands); failed to protect the staff of a hospital from violence that can at least be partly mitigated by better hospital security; and failed to have honest and reasonable dialogue about gun safety and control. May Dr. Davidson's legacy and brilliant work in a too short life be remembered and celebrated and also help us as a community work to overcome these failures. May his wife and children find some measure of comfort in knowing that he touched the lives of many, near and far and more profoundly than words can ever express.

I agree with the staff: "it's horrible for him to loose his life this way". I never knew him on a personal level, but he seemed to be a very charismatic and caring doctor. I am a staff nurse at BWH working on the palliative care unit in the tower. I never met Dr. Davidson but have been so impressed to hear about his brilliance, expertise, compassion, humility,and love for his beautiful family. It is in his character to have taken the time out of his busy day to talk to the family member of a deceased patient. He died as he evidently lived, caring and compassionate. I wish I had catchwords to take away your pain for this senseless loss of a beloved family member. You will miss him always and I will think of him as I walk by the clinic in my way to work. I have been trying to figure out what to say. There are no words that can describe my feelings. I was a recent patient of the good doctor's. I was very high risk. He was wonderful at setting my mind at ease. I've never felt so confident about an outcome as I was with him. He had talked personally to all my doctor's and every one of them was so impressed by his demeanor. The surgery, of course, went fantastically. I remember that he would come in and spend time every day just going over things and checking how I was feeling. There was construction going on next door and sometimes we'd just stand and watch it and talk. I only knew him a short time, but I feel a great loss for the world. God will take him by his side.

On Dec.26,2008, I underwent bypass surgery performed by Mike Davidson. His skill and dexterity resulted in the most precious and magnificent Christmas gift I have ever received = a rejuvenated heart.
