David Lee Kempf, 92, of La Porte passed away on Sunday, Oct. 13, 2024, at Franciscan Health Michigan City.
He was born on March 5, 1932, in Michigan City, Indiana, to Walter A. and Frances (Bowers) Kempf.
Mr. Kempf was an entrepreneur and successful businessman owning Kempf Saddle Shop, Kempf Trailer Sales, Kempf Construction and his lifelong business of Kempf Gun Shop. David served as a gunnery officer in the Naval Reserves in his younger years. He served as Justice of the Peace in the 1960s, was a former member of the La Porte County Sheriff's Posse, and is a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Michigan City, Indiana. Also, David was a longtime member of the Michigan City Rifle Club and Endowment Life member of the National Rifle Association.
On Feb. 2, 1952, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Michigan City, Indiana, he married Monica (Huppenthal) Kempf, who preceded him in death July 26, 2023.
David is survived by his children, Wally (Sherri) Kempf, Mark (Yvonne) Kempf and Susan (Rob) Kempf; along with grandchildren, great-grandchildren and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his wife, Monica Kempf; and one daughter, Kimberly Nash.
A private family service will be held at a later date. Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, Michigan City, is handling the arrangements.

The old guy stuck around for quite a while....and even though I have been gone from the area for years....I still miss him and the rest of the family and the visits we had in the shop. Happy trails Dave and my best thoughts and prayers for all the family especially to Sue and Mark.
