Michael McKone Obituary

Michael Allen McKone SchenectadyMichael Allen McKone died just before midnight on October 4th, 2013. Michael was born in Schenectady, NY in 1952, and is predeceased by his parents, Thomas and Phyllis McKone and his sister, Christine Schermerhorn and his sister-in-law, Linda McKone. He was a loving parent and is survived by his three children, Jonna Elinor McKone, Michael Thomas McKone and Kyle Norman McKone; as well as many close friends; his sister, Patricia Hogan of Glenville and his brothers, Thomas of Schenectady, David (Betty) of Niskayuna, Brian (Margaret) of Ballston Lake, Kevin (Barbara) of Kirkwood, MO and John (Jacqueline) of Arnold, MD and brother-in-law, Thomas Schermerhorn of Oneonta. He was married to Karen Berney for 17 years. Michael graduated from preparatory school at The Hotchkiss School, followed by Brown University and then worked in Korea for General Electric Company. He received his master's degree from the Kellogg School at Northwestern University and worked in international development with a focus on emerging markets, small business development and sales. We remember he was most moved by his work in Haiti and Kosovo, for governmental organizations, like the World Bank. Michael loved history, spy novels, The Rolling Stones, following the news and inexplicably crackers with butter on top. He traveled the world for his work, which reflected his passion, wanderlust and commitment. He was a proud Yankees fan and shared his love of sports and education with his three children along with curiosity and enthusiasm for life. He could swim the 500-meter butterfly with speed and grace, just like he could explain and read a book. He burned brightly, but not long enough for any of us. Dad, you have everywhere to go and everything in front of you because you are in a peaceful place. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the memorial Mass of Christian Burial, which will be celebrated Thursday morning, October 10th, at 9 a.m., at St. John the Evangelist Church in Schenectady. There will be no calling hours. Inurnment will be in Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Niskayuna. Condolences can be sent to: 980 N. Royal St., Alexandria, VA 22314.

I was a kid just graduated from university when I met Mike McKone. I was working with Jamaica's investment promotion agency at the time and was assigned to manage his itinerary of meetings with banks and companies during his mission to Jamaica. New to the role I was frankly very nervous and intimidated but then and today I am so grateful for this assignment. He was so gracious! There was no doubt in my mind despite our few days of interaction that he had a beautiful heart. He grieved the loss of his friends to the Vietnam War and carried a great weight of guilt that he hadn't gone with them. His sadness was balanced by an easy laugh, quick wit and an ease with relating to everyone he met. I learnt so much from Mike McKone. I was so saddened to learn from his precious daughter a few years ago about Mike's passing. How could that be? He passed the same year my dear mom passed and was interred the day after her birthday, our first without her! It's bittersweet the awareness of this synchronicity. They were similar spirits taken away the same year to higher service. I remembered Mike today this Veterans' Day - he was a brave soldier. May his soul rest in peace.
