Sally Carrier Obituary

Sally Davis Carrier passed away on Sunday, June 27, 2021. She was the beloved wife of Edward Carrier with whom she shared 52 years of marriage before his passing in 2019. Sally was born May 23, 1935 to Dr. Cyrus Davis and Sarah Rands Davis of Watervliet NY. A native of upstate New York, Sally graduated from Syracuse University in 1957. Her first job was with Phoenix Mutual Life Insurance, before moving to West Hartford to join Heublein, Inc., where she was the executive secretary to the company CEO for eleven years. Subsequently, she joined her husband, Ted, in his family business, The Lucy Baltzell Shop, an upscale women's specialty clothing store. She was a natural fit, becoming the lead buyer for the store, making frequent buying trips to NYC. Together, Sally and Ted grew the business to two new locations – one in West Hartford and one in Hamden CT. Sally's retail success can be attributed to her customer rapport, attention to detail, and eye for design. She was actively involved until the store's closing in 1998. Friends and colleagues describe Sally as an extremely generous person - with her time, resources, love and hospitality. Involvement in the community and giving back was a high priority. She wanted to make the world a better place in many ways, from working in the soup kitchen, to serving on many local boards for the arts, to hosting/organizing fundraisers, to enjoying friends. A long-time member of Asylum Hill Congregational Church, Sally served on the Board of Deacons and various committees. Of notable impact, she and Ted were instrumental in a building restoration project on Huntington Street, improving neighborhood housing and safety. Another passion was the Loaves and Fishes Soup Kitchen ministry, where she served clients, organized volunteers, and was an active board member for over a decade. Sally also had a passion for antiques and local Connecticut history. The Heublein Tower and Mark Twain House were two landmarks that were especially close to her heart. As a board member for Friends of Heublein Tower, she was instrumental in a major building and interior design renovation and the opening and management of the Tower Gift Shop. As an avid fan of Mark Twain's wit and humor, she was generous supporter of the Mark Twain House & Museum. Through her service as a board member of the Friends of Mark Twain, she shared her gifts of hospitality and glamor at their annual Holiday House Tour fundraisers. Interest and passion for the arts were expressed through support and attendance at the Goodspeed Opera House, Wadsworth Athenaeum, New Britain Museum of Art, and The Bushnell. Additionally, she was a member and frequent Bridge player at the Town & County Club. Sally loved the company of friends on lunch excursions, where she could be counted on to listen well, share stories, and insert a good dose of humor. She was one of a kind. Her humble generosity, kindness, compassion, and love of life will be missed. Sally is survived by her brother, Dr. Robert Davis of Plattsburgh, NY and his children, Karen Midkiff (Keith) of Indianapolis IN, Susan Sanford (Ted) of Colchester CT, and William Davis (Natasha) of Seattle WA and their children: Katie, Hannah and Andrea; Luke and Jeremiah; and Nikita, Peter and Alex. Also surviving are her nephew Craig Carrier (Donna), his children Seth, Aaron and Caelyn, and her niece Catherine Carrier of Agawam MA. She was predeceased by her sister-in-law Jeanne Davis of Plattsburgh and brother-in-law, Cris Carrier of Hartford. Per Sally's wishes, there will be no calling hours and a private memorial service will be held for the family at Asylum Hill Congregational Church, in Hartford. In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation may be made to the Loaves and Fishes Ministry, 646 Prospect Avenue, Hartford CT 06015 or the Mark Twain House & Museum, 1351 Farmington Ave, Hartford CT 06105. Arrangements are being handled by the Ahern Funeral Home, www.ahernfuneralhome.com.

Ted and family - I'm so sorry to hear of Sally's passing. She was always such a kind soul, and I will fondly remember our chats about Heublein Tower, and life in general. She genuinely cared about people, and had so much love for everyone in her heart. Missed, but certainly not forgotten.

Dear Dr. Davis and family, So very sorry for your loss. Sally was such a remarkable woman. It was my honor to have her both as a loyal customer-and as a colleague in the West Hartford Merchants Association. Hugs to all. Sarah Bedell(retired Bookworm)

Sally was easy to love and fun to be with. She was kind, intelligent, generous, and most interesting. I met Sally through the Costume & Textile Society of the Wadsworth Atheneum. She often donated clothing for sale to our Posh Fund Raising Events at the Museum and to The St. Francis Hospital Women's Committee. Sally was someone who added value to the day and to society in general. Sally, you will be missed very much. Having you as a friend was a gift, Love Helen Hodgman

So many good memories to share about Sally. Most of all, her sense of humor, her generous spirit and her ability to see the the positive side when - sometimes - none existed. Sally was a dear friend and I will miss our chats. The world is a better place today because of her!!!
