Jerlyn Gilmore Obituary

Jerlyn Gilmore

Jerlyn Rae Gilmore, nee Schmidt, 56, born September 9, 1958, in Des Moines, Iowa, passed away Sunday, May 3, 2015, at Anderson Hospital, in the company of her family.

Jerlyn received a Master of Science in Physical Geography from SIUE and a Bachelors of Science in Geol ogy/Anthropology from Ball State University.

Jerlyn led a life full of joy and enthusiasm. Always optimistic and always caring, she was a selfless person who was ever ready to lend a helping hand or empathetic ear. Jeri had many diverse interests and passions in her life. She loved geology and spent many years teaching it at several local colleges. She loved to travel and visit all of the natural wonders of the great outdoors. She was a wonderful dancer and was never afraid to be the first one out to the dance floor. She of course cared for her family enormously, and dedicated herself fully to being a loving wife and mother. Jeri was always strong, and absolutely refused to ever be a burden on others. Her infinite kindness, boundless strength, and uncompromising love will forever be held as an example to everyone who knew her. Jeri touched many hearts and minds in her time on this earth and will be greatly missed.

She was preceded by her sister Jill Schmidt.

Jerlyn is survived by her husband, Terry Gilmore whom she married on July 4, 1981, at St. John's United Methodist Church, Edwardsville, Ill. Together they have two sons, Nathan and Ryan Gilmore.

She was very much loved and will be missed by her mother, Jean Schmidt-Rogier; her step-father, Richard Rogier; and her siblings, James Schmidt, Jan Schlueter, and Jenny Khan.

The family suggest a memorial to American Heart Association.

Last time I saw her she was camping with her family at Pultite on the Current River. Scotty Garbs and I were fellow scientists and will miss her, as will the teaching world.

So sad to hear of Jerlyn's passing. Seeing her name, the first thing I thought of was her smile. I think the world is a little dimmer without it.

I believe in my previous text that I might've misspelled Jerlyn's name. My deepest apologies!

To say that I was shocked to see Jerlyn's obituary in the paper is an understatement! My memories of Jeryln go all the way back to high school (Edwardsville High School). Even though Jerlyn was a year ahead of me, we spent a lot of time together in band, as well as music theory class. She was a super, SUPER sweet individual, who, I don't think, had a bad word to say about anyone! It is mentioned in her obit that she loved to dance. I can attest to that. One memory of Jerlyn that I will ALWAYS have goes back to late May, or early June, 1977. That was when we took a band trip to the Lake of the Ozarks (it was right after Jerlyn had graduated high school). On a Saturday evening, we were on an excursion boat at Osage Beach called "The Larry Don." They had music on the cruise, and I remember Jeryln grabbing me by the hand, and pulling me out to the dance floor. LOL! Here, recently (within the past year or two), I would periodically see Jeryln and her husband at the Grafton Winery (dancing up a storm) after the two of them would take a motorcycle ride up there. I will surely miss seeing her around, as well as her infectious smile. "R.I.P, my old friend! I will save the next dance for you!"
