Joan Murray Obituary

Joan E. Murray

Newburgh, Ind.

Joan Murray, 82, beloved sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, neighbor and friend, passed away April 25, 2017 at home in The Woodlands, Texas. Joan was a resident of Newburgh for over 27 years.

Joan's positive attitude and "Start each day with a smile" approach to life endeared her to many. Joan was born February 17, 1935 to the late Harriet and Leroy Oswald in Kewaunee, Wisconsin. She was raised in Madison, the middle of three sisters. Growing up during the Depression and WWII, Joan learned thrift, growing and canning vegetables, and meticulous record-keeping. She supported the war effort knitting socks for soldiers. Some favorite memories of childhood are the days spent near the shores of Lake Michigan. Joan's parents were proponents of education. Joan attended University of Wisconsin where she met and married Joe Murray in 1955. What a row Joan had with her parents when she decided to leave the university without a degree! While raising three children, Joan continued her education, earning a bachelor degree in 1977. She worked for various small businesses as bookkeeper and accountant. Over their 59 years of marriage, Joan and Joe lived in 6 states: New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Virginia, Kentucky and Indiana. With every move, Joan became part of the community by volunteering for local civic and non-profit organizations. Her passion for family, books, bridge, gardening, and golf brought many new and long lasting friendships. Joan and Joe were long-time members of the Rolling Hills Country Club.

Every home was enhanced by Joan's dedication to gardening. Joan continued learning into her 70s, earning her Advanced Master Gardener Certification, and loved working at the gardens in Newburgh, Indiana.

Joan cared for Joe for many years while he was suffering with dementia. After Joe died, Joan moved to Texas to be near family and found a welcoming community at The Village. She enjoyed the many activities and exploring the Houston area.

Joan left this life deeply grateful for her loving family, her longtime friendships and 82 good years.

Joan was predeceased by her husband Joe Murray, and survived by her two sisters, three children, seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial for Joan will be held in Wisconsin in July. Memorial donations may be made to Friends of Acadia National Park, Mercer Society (Botanic Gardens Humble, Texas), or your favorite charity.
