Lee Farmelo Obituary

Lee A. Farmelo, 76, of Hillview, Valley Township ended a courageous battle with cancer at the Chester County Hospice Center on August 19, 2013 in the presence of his wife and friends.

Born as one of eight brothers and educated in Elkland, Pennsylvania, Mr. Farmelo received a BS in Science from The United States Military Academy at West Point, where he was an All American soccer player and a MS in Aeronautics and Astronautics at MIT.

He was promoted to the rank of Captain in the Air Force and was made Test Director of the USAF Command and Control System in the Pentagon until his retirement in 1965.

From 1965 to 1979, he worked for Corning Glass at Corning, NY where he held several management positions in manufacturing, engineering and research before being appointed Director of Systems Engineering.

From 1979 to 1992, Mr. Farmelo held several management positions at Scott Paper Company, Philadelphia; among them, Director of Organization Effectiveness and Director of Manufacturing Information Systems.

In 1992, Mr. Farmelo was a cofounder and Principal of Theseus Corporation, a Management Consulting Company.

Clients included, among others, Aim Management (Houston, TX), Appleton Papers (Appleton, WI), Chemical Bank (NY, NY) and FMC Corp. (Newark, DE) and the Kingdom of Jordan.

He also taught graduate business courses at Devry University, Philadelphia. In 1960, he married his high school sweetheart, Judy Marshall, who died of cancer in 1982.

Two years later, in Norway, Lee met the love of his life, his wife and soul mate, Unni Marie Farmelo, from Andenes, Norway.

Lee is also survived by his five children, Lisa Farmelo and Julie Farmelo Farresta, both of Tijeras, NM, Michael Farmelo (Kimberly) of Davidsonville, MD, Elisabeth Olsen Cromwell (John) of Arcata, CA, Anders Olsen of Centre Hill, PA; eleven adoring grandchildren; and his only surviving brother, Neil Farmelo of Willimsville, NY.

After retiring, Lee founded three men's dialogue groups in Chester County, based on the teachings of Philosopher, David Bohm.
His hobbies included playing golf, flying his own plane, woodworking, and fly fishing.

Lee will be best remembered as a man with whom you could fish, play golf, philosophize or just hang out, who never had a friend or a neighbor that he didn't help, a man who could not stand at attention for the Star Spangled Banner without tears in his eyes.

The family wishes to thank Dr. David Grossman and the staff at West Chester Cancer Center as well as the Neighborhood Hospice for their excellent care.

A celebration of Lee's life will be held on Sunday, August 25, 2013 at the Cornerstone Fellowship Church, 101 Kylies Road, Coatesville.

Family will receive guests at 2 p.m. Services will begin at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in Lee's memory may be made to the Cornerstone Fellowship Church at the above address or to the Chester County Hospital Foundation, West Chester, PA 19380 or to the Neighborhood Hospice, 400 East Marshall St., West Chester, PA 19380

I am in tears as I learn of Lee's passing. He touched my life and my heart. He had a huge impact on my life path and that of the many people he coached during a very difficult period at Chemical Bank. I learned so much from Lee and have such fond memories. His memory will live in the hearts of those he touched. G. McGee

Dear Unni and family, the Cortright family in Corning is deeply saddened by Lee's passing. He was a wonderful friend and neighbor. To Lisa or Julie, Ida has Christmas cards homemade by your mom, Judy, that she would love to pass on to either of you if you would like them. She is still at the Hickock Rd. address.
