Vincent Danz Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 5, 2001.
'A Special Breed'
Vincent G. Danz was a member of the New York Police Department's Emergency Service Unit's third squad in the Bronx. The elite unit's officers are experts in areas like psychology, rappelling, scuba diving, first aid and marksmanship. Officer Danz liked the excitement and challenge of the E.S.U.

Officer Danz, of Farmingdale, N.Y., was also a husband, and a father of three daughters, including an 8-month-old. With the two older girls, he liked to watch "SpongeBob SquarePants," a Nickelodeon cartoon.

"He was a special breed," Felix Danz said of his brother, who at 38 was the youngest of nine children. "I'd always ask him if he had any good jobs lately. He'd say, 'Yeah, I had this subway "pin job," ' where some poor soul was taken out by the subway, or even worse, still alive.

"The E.S.U. guys are the ones who go on the tracks, find some way to lift up the train and get those people out," Mr. Danz continued. "He wasn't boastful. He wasn't one of those guys with the swelled chest at the bar. He loved his work and the guys that he worked with. They would die for one another. I think that goes globally for the N.Y.P.D. My brother and his partner went into the trade center without any questions. They knew what to do and how to do it. Unfortunately, this thing was bigger than either of them."

Dear Vincent,
Not a year goes by when I don't tell everybody about you and the amazing person you were. I worked with you for a few months. Not everybody knows but you were a great Carpenter. You and I worked together for another Vinnie remodeling houses and we worked on hanging doors and doing trim. You were a very humble, funny guy. We had lots of laughs and I learned a lot from you. You told me stories of you working the beat and the people you met. You worked in a tough neighborhood but had the respect of the neighborhood because of your "always look on the brightside attitude". I live in Chicago these days but you are always in my thoughts and the way you lived your life is something I have always tried to follow. I will never forget you brother and it is like yesterday that we hung that tough exterior door in Garden City on Long Island. From one of the many lives that you touched in your amazing life.

We send our sincere thoughts of sympathy to your family. Our words can't take away the pain of losing someone special but may they show that others still do care. Daily may God give the needed support as you continue to try to cope. Vincent will never be forgotten but will always be fondly remembered by others.

Vin,

Another year goes by but the pain of that day is there. My son is 18 and is studying criminal justice. He hopes to be a police officer. He knows all about you. I'll always remember funny times we had during our years with the Marine Corps reserve and the way you kept us all laughing. To your girls: Your dad was tops! A very special guy to say the least. I hope that you know that.

Hey Vin, this past Saturday 9/07 I went to a beautiful tribute in Dallas to the hero's of the NYPD and NYFD. There were firefighters and Police Officers who volunteered to climb 110 floors in memory of the hero's lost on 9/11. I got to meet the SWAT Officer who climbed in your honor, Grant Champion. I felt your presence so strongly as he ran over and hugged me before he went into the building, it was so bittersweet. I told him that if he is ever in a tight spot to look up and say "Hey Vin, over here" and you would protect him physically, mentally and spiritually.
I miss you so much, it hurts. Life goes on but you are never forgotten.
Love you Forever
Like you for Always

Hi Vinny, its been awhile. I just joined weight watchers a little while ago. While driving there the exit I get off is Menetto Hill road, the same exit when we went to the reserve center. Recently I went early on Sunday and the way the sun was coming up brought my back to those times. For a second in my minds eye i saw you sitting there in your cammies. You are missed but will live on in my heart and stories. My son and daughter know who you are and that you are my hero.

Vincent,

We didn't really know each other. Your Winnie and my Emily were in the same kindergarten class. I just wanted to tell you of two memories I have of you. One time I saw you and Winnie riding bicycles together. I thought "how sweet, what a good dad!" Another time there was an event in the classroom for parents. Our girls were sitting at the same table. There was a little boy at the table who didn't have a parent there that day. As the children were doing the craft activity with their parents I lifted my eyes in the boy's direction, and there you were.....shoulder to shoulder with this little man, helping him with his craft, being just what he needed at that moment, a hero. I don't know if that young man has any memory of that, but the love that you showed him that day will be with him forever.

Vincent,
Even though I barely knew you, you lived down the street from me. Your sacrifice was one of the biggest reasons I decided to join the military and am now a social studies teacher. I will always make sure my students know the price you and your brothers selflessly paid to help your fellow man. Thank you.

September 9, 2011

Vinny. I was often told that one of the reasons you became a Police Officer, was because of the horrific manner in which we all lost your wonderful sister and my childhood friend, Winnie! YOU chose to honor her with service to protect and help those in need which you did right up to the hour of your leaving us. YOU were born a hero, lived as a hero and gave your life as a hero. Thank you.

Dear Vincent, my daughter Allison just told me of this website this morning. I am so glad to be able to write down, finally, how much I miss you. I haven't seen too much of Angela and the girls since they moved upstate, but I think of them, and pray for them, every day ... as I do for you.
On Saturday, Sept. 11, 2010, I went to Southampton to pick up your Mom and attend Mass at St. Rosalie's with Felix, Sophia, Liv and Bill Manley. We spent the day honoring and remembering you. First very solemnly at church and at Sacred Hearts Cemetery; then started the stories over breakfast at the diner and again at the beach at Road D --- Vinny Danz's road. Felix had someone take a picture of us under your road sign. What a glorious day it was --- the same way it was in 2001. My Building has an unobstructed view of downtown and every day as I pass reception and look out, your name comes to my lips.

I know that you, Winnie, Mary and my Uncle Buddy are watching over us. Hopefully they are sitting with my Mom and Dad and all of our other aunts and uncles. It sure will be some party when we are all together again.

Love and hugs are coming up to you.
Your cousin,

Shortly after 9/11 I bought a bracelet with your nameon it. I still wear it every day proudly and have not taken it off since putting it on the day I reveived it. I am honored to wear your name on my wrist. You are a true hero. I have spoken by email to your brother and wife a few times. I am a retired police officer and was injured in the line of duty and forced to retire. Although I never met you, I feel like I knew you by all the people who wrote here about you. You will always be in my heart and I will wear this band forever. It sounds like just something people say but I truly mean it. Several years ago I was in a motorcyle accident and I broke my left wrist. They had to remove the wristband to xray it and placed it on my right wrist. I would not let them cast my arm because I could not wear the wristband where it had been since getting it. I told them the wrist will be fine, put the baraclet back on. And guess what, it is fine. I believe that your bracelet and a little bit of my stubborness made the wrist heal just fine on its own. Like I said, I never met you but I believe we are brothers in blue forever.

Hello Vincent,

Well here we are agin my love, another year passing without you in this world. We all went down to ground zero yesterday. Winnie decided she wanted to read some names this year. Well my love she was fantastic. If you could see her I know you would have been beaming with pride. She misses you so very much. It was very difficult to be there because it is such a sad place for me. I looked up at the huge cranes and was filled with such pain and saddness for a life cut short. We had so much to do love and you had plans to work one of those cranes some day. I know you are in a better place and I know you watch over us each day but I miss your laugh, your smile your strength. The girls are doing great. Kevin and I are hard at work trying to do our best. Winnie is a senior in highschool and an amazing kid. Emily, a freshman, cannot take that in just yet, she seems too young, the sweetest thing on the planet. Abigail, is in 4th grade and still a powerhouse of personality, the happiest child and such a joy to be with every day. We all miss you and ask that you continue to be our guardian through the days. I love you with all my heart and always will. xxxAngela

Hey Vin, I couldn't let this day come to a close without dropping you a line. It's hard to believe it's been 9 years. Why does it seem like it was just a while ago that you were here. When this date shows up every year the pain is so hard to bear. This year we celebrated your life with a family dinner, it was so comforting to be with people who love and remember you - you will never be forgotten. And having your little name sake to hold in my arms is such a blessing. He is a flesh and blood remembrance of you as a little boy, very gentle spirited and loveable. Vin you are missed and remain in our hearts not only today but everyday. Always remember...
I'll love you forever

September 11, 2010

Dear Vincent,

I was thinking of you today and was blessed to find this site. It's difficult to figure out exactly what to say....but want to try to tell you what great memories I have of you!

I have so many great memories of the little house in South Hampton...visiting Uncle Bud & Aunt Ellen with my mom, Meg! You were one of the only Danz kids still around...as I was so much younger than you all! As a kid...I never knew what we would "DO" out in So Hampton & I would secretely wish for you to be there...as you always made those visits so much fun. Later....you and Angela made the treck out to my mom's house for my Sweet 16 & graduation parties...and all I remember was laughing with you both! It always meant to so much to have an older cousin take time out to spend with us.

I've since had the chance to get to know many of your older siblings when my husband and I lived out in California for a few years. They all took great care of us out there, as our immediate families were so far away. I had the chance to get to know you even more through all of their incredible stories of you. (most of them funny!) I so wish I'd had the chance to spend time with you all together.

Know that I think of you often, esp. in September and I always keep you & your family close to my heart & in my prayers.

Love,
Allison DeGia Hartley

Today marks the 9th anniversary of the horrible day in our history when so many people were stolen from us. I thank you Vincent for being such and honorable man. Thank you for serving our Country and then serving the people of New York. I will continue to pray for your precious family. We will never forget you.

Dear Vin,

And yet another year has passed. September 11th (my birthday) will always be the saddest day in my life.
You are the brother I never had and the best friend anyone could ask for.
You touched so many hearts. You are in my thoughts and in my prayers always as you know.
May God Bless you Vincent,

Brian Wall

Hello Vincent,

Today is September 12h and another year has passed. Yesterday was as usual a difficult day for us. The girls and I feel your loss each day but on the 11th it is especially hard. So many memories play over and over in my head about that day and the days before when all was "normal" for us. The girls are doing great. Winnie is now a Jr in high school and still playing volleyball and softball. She is awesome and a very good kid. Emily is in 8th grade and also has taken up volleyball (i guess all those summers in southampton playing beach volleyball payed off, ha ha ) Emily is terrific a truly beautiful person and Sweet Abigail, in the 3rd grade, still as sweet but with a whole lotta personality. I know they miss you as do i but Kevin and I are working hard to raise them with a lot of love and laughter. Keep watching over them love and keep them safe. I miss you more than words can say and i love you with all my heart xxxx Angela Danz
