Frederick Danz Obituary

Frederick Walter Danz Jr.

October 13, 1931 - March 8, 2026

DANZ, Frederick (Fred) Walter, Glen Allen, Va. I was born in Hackensack, N.J. October 13, 1931; graduated HHS class of '49; served in the US Army Intelligence Corps (an oxymoronic title) '51-'54, honorably discharged sergeant; and, rejoined the workforce while attending evening classes at Fairleigh Dickinson Univ in Teaneck, N.J. After attending the 1960 Jamboree at Colorado Springs, I joined the professional service of the BSA servicing councils in Clifton, N.J., River Edge, N.J., NYC, Highland Park, Ill. and Richmond, Va., retiring in 1996. As a Finance Director, it was a tough hike raising money for Scouting but I enjoyed every minute while watching young men attain their potential through the program. Though not Jewish, in 1984 I received the Shofar Award from the Jewish Committee on Scouting for my efforts on behalf of that faith's Scouts. My Scouting volunteer energies were recognized with the Vigil Honor of the Order of the Arrow in 1982 and the Silver Beaver Award in 2005. I've been an active member of the Kiwanis Clubs in Ridgewood, N.J.; earned the Distinguished Club President's award in Highland Park; and rose to 2nd VP of the Richmond Club. Vacations took me to: Aruba, Australia, Austria, Bahamas, Canada, England, Germany, Holland, Hong Kong, Italy, Liechtenstein, Morocco, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Scotland, Spain, Switzerland, Thailand, Vatican City and many places in the US including Alaska & Hawaii. I met some terrific people while sampling local cuisine and beer including being a "first footer" in Scotland. My 250-year-old/30 acre farm at Schroon Lake, N.Y. was a retreat and the joy of my life. I spent many weekends with friends water skiing the 9-mile lake and touring the Adirondack Park. My retirement years were spent reading to the visually impaired over the Virginia Voice Radio Reading Service; volunteering at the local Scout Office; serving on the HOA Board for Laurel Lake Condo Assoc.; and, for 13 years, an instructor/Ass't State Coordinator for AARP's Driver Safety course. My time is up. My ashes will be spread over the field at Schroon Lake. A celebration of my life will not be held. I prefer the next time you hold a drink in your hand, think of me! Do not mourn my passing but do celebrate my life. It wasn't easy sliding down the razor blade of life with a perfect manhattan in each hand.
