Barbara Etzold Obituary

The Right Number
Barbara Etzold always answered the phone whenever David Konigsberg called for a friend who never seemed to be available. On one level, this was natural; she was, after all, a receptionist at Fred Alger Management. On another, it was kismet.

Two months into this strange telephonic relationship, Mr. Konigsberg mentioned in passing that he would be stopping by the office, and Ms. Etzold popped the question: "Why don't you take me out to lunch?"

The widowed receptionist and the divorced health-benefits administrator became inseparable. In 1997, a year after their first date, the couple moved into a house that Mr. Konigsberg bought in Jersey City. They would boat together along the Hudson River, snorkel together in the Bahamas, ride stationary bicycles together at a local health club. "She and I were just livers of life," Mr. Konigsberg said, referring to Ms. Etzold, who was 43. "There wasn't enough."

Then, of course, there was their Harley- Davidson. The two of them would zoom down to the beaches of New Jersey, to an arts-and-crafts community in Pennsylvania, or to the village of Cold Spring, in Putnam County. "You go up that Route 9W and over the Bear Mountain Bridge," Mr. Konigsberg said. "Especially at this time of year, when it's the most beautiful."

Barbara - I remember sitting in the Fred Alger lobby and chatting with you so many times. You were always so real and down to earth. I remember sitting there one day and you had a migraine and we still chatted and managed to have a few laughs. Thanks for being so gracious. I´ll never forget you or any of the others. You are missed, lady. God Bless

Remembering Barbara on the 20th anniversary of 9/11...

Barbara and I worked together for a few years at Balis & Zorn in the late 80s. She was a friend and a mentor to me, as I was a college student at the time. I think about her often especially on days like 9/11/16 when you realize that the world goes on but the lives of those who were touched will always be changed for the better. I wish her family comfort and peace.

Barbara, I often think if you, especially around this time of year. I miss your smile and your bubbly personality. I always visit you at each 9/11 memorial service I attend and lay a flower by your name. I know you're at peace. Know that you and all of the victims of this horrendous day will never be forgotten.

Barbara and i never met but I talked to her two or three times a week. I worked for Corporate Express, who supplied Barbara's company. We built up a wonderful working relationship over the years. She would send me a chocolate cake for Christmas. I knew, as soon as I heard that the South Tower had collapsed, that she was gone. She always came to work early. If only she would have been late for work that day.

I never had the honor of meeting you. But, somehow I believe I would have loved knowing you. Yesterday was the 10th anniversary of 9/11 and our church had a very wonderful service in honor and memory of the 9/11 victims and thier family and friends. We each recieved a nametag of a person that we were to pray for. I was given your name. May all who love you and miss you be comforted a little by knowing that a complete stranger is praying for them! Also, know that you are in the heart and prays of a woman that will never forget your name.

For the first time since 9/11/2002, I was away from home for the ninth anniversary memorial services and was troubled by that. I talk about you often, especially as we approach each 9/11, and had to make due this year with a 9/9 visit to the Jersey City memorial. You still are missed but not forgotten. Barb Smith

Barb, I still hear your voice in my head saying, "Hi Ladies", as we waited for the ferry to take us home from New York to New Jersey. I visit your memorial in Exchange Place where you name is listed among those other Jersey City residents lost that day. My hope is that you felt neither fear nor pain at that dreadful moment. You are missed greatly. Barb Smith

Barb, I think of you often and still can't believe that this had to happen to you. You were so full of life and love, such a pleasure to know. While my husband only knew you in passing, he, too, feels your loss. My prayers are with your mom, brother and David. Look over us and protect us. You were more than just my boat buddy, I considered you my friend.

BARBARA WAS A TRUE FRIEND OF MINE WHILE I WAS AT ALGER. SHE HAD A WONDERFUL SENSE OF HUMOR AND SHE AND I WOULD MAKE EACH OTHER LAUGH AND BE SILLY ALL DAY LONG. SHE WAS SUCH A GREAT REP FOR THE FIRM AND WAS MORE OF A CHEERY, INCREDIBLY INTELLIGENT AMBASSADOR FOR THE FIRM THAN MERELY A RECEPTIONIST. I KNOW THAT SHE DEARLY LOVED HER FAMILY, HER BOYFRIEND AND HER LITTLE DOG PETEY. I'M SO SORRY YOU'RE NOT HERE WITH US ANYMORE AND I REALLY MISS YOU, LOVE, DAVID

For Christmas my daughter gave me a Mercy BAND with Barbara's name. I am honored to wear it and tell others about the bracelet and what I know about her. I wish I knew more. If the family would like to e-mail me I would be greatful. May God bless you.

We are deeply sorry for your loss of Barbara. May her life and love live on in those who love her. Our hearts cry with you in your loss of Barbara.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

Barbara was a very "thoughtful and sweet" person. When I would call the firm to talk to my daughter, Meredith, Barbara's melodic voice would always be on the other end of the phone. I once told her it was always such a pleasure to call and be greeted by such a pleasant voice as hers. She was a GREAT representative of the Alger firm!

She also was a very caring person and demonstrated it when she brought hot chicken noodle soup to my daughter's desk on one occasion when she wasn't feeling up to par. She went out of her way to care about others.

I was very sorry to learn that she, too, along with my daughter, perished that awful September 11th day.

My condolences to her male companion and her entire family. She was a delightful woman.

Barbara and I were good friends. I would always give her the newspaper and any magazines that I had read when I walked into work. She would have a great big smile and joke around about "another wonderful day at Alger". It was a private little joke between the two of us. I will miss her & all the other co-workers and friends that I had at Alger. I pray for them and their families during this difficult time.
