Arthur Barry Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 7, 2001.
10,000 Miles by Motorcycle
Arthur T. Barry had an irrepressible joie de vivre.

Last year, he drove his motorcycle on a 10,000- mile trip diagonally through Canada to Fairbanks, Alaska, and returned traveling across the country.

That was just one example. Mr. Barry, 35, a lifelong resident of Westerleigh, in Staten Island, spent his youth zipping across the country on road trips, said his mother, Audriene Barry.

Mr. Barry's zest for life was apparent in his work, she said. He was in the business of saving lives as a New York City firefighter for the last seven years. Before becoming a firefighter, he had worked as an elevator mechanic and a machine-tool technician. He was a member of Ladder Company 15 near the South Street Seaport, and his colleagues frequently relied on him to repair elevators during high-rise fires. "He truly loved the Fire Department," Mrs. Barry said.

Firefighting was in his blood. His father, Bertrand, retired as a fireboat pilot after 20 years on the job, Mrs. Barry said. For a time, Bertrand Barry patrolled the waters of New York Harbor in the shadow of the World Trade Center.

I never met Arthur Barry, but I have been privileged to carry a memorial card bearing his name and photograph for 22 years now. Judging by the information I've received over the years I do believe I would like this young man. To his family and friends I offer my condolences. Yes, 22 years later they are still in mourning his loss, as am I and millions of individuals around the world. Arthur we pray every day for you and your compatriots. Your sacrifice will never be forgotten. Thank you and God Bless You.

Today the world is remembering the 11th of the 9th 2001. While I remember the moments of the day as seen through the eyes of the television camera, I also remember Arthur Barry. We had never met but I soon learned a lot about Arthur... because Arthur became a hero in my eyes that day, a fallen hero. To his family, his friends and all those who knew and loved him I send my deepest sympathy. For 20 years they have lived with only his memory. In my part of the world we remember Arthur because of a small green card with his name printed on it, along with details of his service as a New York City Firefighter. Thank you for your service Arthur. Requiesce In Pace.

September 11, 2020

It's been 19 years since 2001. And for each of those 19 years I have been honored to carry the name of Arthur T Barry on a card in my wallet. The card is somewhat the worse for wear as I try to share it with as many people as possible - to remind them - to ensure they will never forget the heroes that were born and died on 9/11. Arthur is my personal hero and today I remember him. We never met but I will forever honor his sacrifice on this date 19 years ago.

You may be gone, but you will never be forgotten. When I look at your mass card and see that smile all the good memories / road trips come rushing back (Bert was right about the photo). I know you are looking down on us, watching our backs, a beer in your hand and a wise crack ready to go.

Thank you for helping the rest of us realize the hidden meanings within our ambitions.
I deeply hope that there is indeed a "resting place" for people like you, and that some kinds of divine interventions and intercessions do actually exist and effect us everyday. I may not be one of faith, but I do hold the most hope and faith in the human spirit--and so therefore, you have become a driving force for us, and within us all.

For 12 years I have kept in my wallet a small green card with the name of Arthur T. Barry. And every year on the 9th day of the 11th month I say a prayer for Arthur and every other soul that was lost in the World Trade Center. Thinking of your family today and crying as I read all the love that has been shared in this guest book. You will not be forgotten. Your bravery and that of your 'brothers' lives on in all our hearts. RIP

In late 2001 I was given a card that held the name of a fallen hero of 9-11. Arthur T. Barry is the name; and, to this day, I carry that card with me. Although we never met, I will never forget you Arthur. Thank you for your service.

Arthur,
I remember always riding my bike up the street as a kid and you would jump out and call my name. I would never see you because it was dark out or you were hiding. Then you would scream its me, Arthur Barry!
And i would laugh and say you scared me.
You would always wait till i wasnt looking or near past you,so i wouldnt see who it was.
We had some good laughs.
You told me later on you were too shy to say hello, face to face.
We both were so shy. Guess what i still am! lol.
It is so sad you lost your life so early. I read your guest book and
cried near all the way thru it.
I send light and love to your parents.
I wish we knew each other better we were only kids in grammar school and the neighborhood.
God Bless You!
Love always,
Caroline

Tribute to Firefighters of FDNY!

In the battle against the beastly fire...
They stay together, ready to fight!
To help all the victims of every accident,
committed to rescue, by day and by night.

These are the courageous Firefighters,
In their cities and towns of every land.
They stand together as really true friends,
Routinely they're all working hand in hand.

Everyone of them looks after the other,
Their brotherhood knows no borders...!
They are ready to help in their unselfish way,
Without fear, they follow their orders!

Many of them gave their lives in New York,
On September the eleventh, two thousand and one...!
Firefighters everywhere will remember that day,
And their feelings of loss will never be gone.

Written by Hartmut Reinsch
(FIRE Fighter Poet)
September 16, 2001 Toronto Canada

May we always remember their sacrifice,
in their quest to help and save the lives of innocent victims,
on that tragic day of Sept. 11. 2001 in New York City, USA.

A word after..., from "ground zero!"

What we are left with,
surrounded by death and fear,
is our sense of loyalty and of duty...
which calls upon us
to place a shining beacon of hope in this world,
and to entrust the universal darkness
to the light of God.

With every reminder of 9/11, and there are many..I think of Arthur and his zest for life, his sense of adventure, his dry sense of humor and talent for fixing anything, including my hair stuck in a bicycle chain (hard to explain that one). Arthur thoroughly lived all the days of his life, something that can't be said for everyone. He will always be remembered, and I continue to hold a sadness in my heart for the death-too-soon of the boy nextdoor. - Karen (Amoia) Milano

Then we met again years later in the Odyssey Lounge and became friends again...then lost touch. Then I hear you are one of my brothers closest friends...strange how the world turns. Some people are just meant to be connected and I always felt that connection with you.

Arthur,

I am a distant cousin, my father was Barrett O'Neill, cousin to your mom & dad. I remember so well spending holidays with your family. When I'd heard that you were lost in the attacks, I was upset at the loss. Although I did not know you as an adult, I've read many things about you. You were a wonderful and caring person. I've prayed for your family and know that you will rest easy in God's arms. Sleep well, hero.
