Carl Mundy Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 3, 2014.
General Carl Epting Mundy, Jr., beloved father and grandfather, died at his home in Virginia on April 3. He is survived by his three children, Mrs. Elizabeth Gunter, Brigadier General Carl Mundy, III, and Colonel Timothy Mundy, together with eleven grandchildren and great-grandchildren. General Mundy's wife of 56 years, Linda Sloan Mundy, died on June 26, 2013.General Mundy was born July 16, 1935, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Epting Mundy of Lake Junaluska, NC. After graduation from Auburn University, he married his fourth grade sweetheart and began his life as a newly commissioned Marine Corps officer. Over the succeeding years, General Mundy commanded at every level and served in a variety of staff assignments, fought in Vietnam with the 3rd Battalion, 26th Marines at Khe Sanh and Con Thien, and capped his tenure by accepting the appointment to serve as the 30th Commandant of the Marine Corps from 1991 to 1995. Throughout his distinguished career, he proved to be a genial leader of extraordinary ability; a consummate professional and a Marine for all seasons. After retiring General Mundy served as the Chief Executive Officer of the United Services Organization from 1995 - 2001, as the President of the Marine Corps University Foundation, and served on the Board of Directors of several corporations. As a retired senior leader of the Corps, his strategic insights were greatly valued and continued to guide and influence Marine leaders until his death. To those who knew and loved him, Carl Mundy was first and foremost a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who took great delight in the time spent with his family. For countless others, he was a devoted friend, mentor, and man of honor, compassion and integrity whose wise counsel was a towering source of strength. He got along with everyone, even those with whom he disagreed, amassed legions of admirers, and his quick wit and ability to find humor in any circumstance will be sorely missed. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation will provide a meaningful contribution that preserves the legacy of the institution that he loved so much and to which he devoted his life. Correspondence to the family should be sent to P.O. Box 219, Sealston VA 22547. General Mundy's service to his country and the Corps will be honored in a military tribute on Saturday, April 12th, at 11:00a.m., at the Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington, VA. Following, his family will accompany him to Waynesville, NC. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 19th, at the First United Methodist Church of Waynesville, where he will lie in state one hour prior to the service. Following the service, he will be interred in Green Hill Cemetery next to his beloved wife, Linda. In Lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation: (In Memory of Gen Carl E Mundy, Jr.), 3800 FETTLER PARK DR., SUITE 104, DUMFRIES, VA, 22025.
