Mary Zang Obituary

Published by Porter Loring Mortuary McCullough on Jan. 25, 2015.
Mary Catherine Zang, 83, went peacefully home to the Lord on Sunday morning, January 25, 2015, following a short battle with cancer. A gentle yet spirited woman who tended to family, friends, and all furry and winged creatures of nature, Mary spent her entire life in service to others. Born in Columbus, Ohio on November 2, 1931, Mary attended Saint Mary's of the Springs and The Ohio State University and was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to the University of Rennes in France. Preceded in death by her parents, Francis X. and Margaret C. Zang and her dear friend Eileen Mitchell, Mary is survived by her brother Frank Zang, sisters Margaret Kozelek and Agatha Gary and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. After graduating from college, Mary taught French at Saint Mary's of the Springs in Columbus, Ohio, followed by 30 years of teaching at San Antonio College, her adopted hometown where she built a custom home and became a bona fide Texan. Many family members visited her there over the years and her door was always open to the abundance of neighbors who counted Mary as a loyal friend. Thankfully Mary was able to remain in her home, with family and friends at her side, until the end. Mary's activities included Act II, Literary Ladies, Consolation Ministry and Bible Study Group at Saint Matthews Church. Mary was affiliated with the Dominicans. She was a lifelong Catholic, a compassionate Christian who loved so many and judged so few. She will be missed terribly. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Mary's health care givers and vigilant neighbors and close friends for all of their unwavering support throughout Mary's illness and especially in her final days. The family will receive friends at St. Matthew's Catholic Church, 10703 Wurzbach Road on Thursday, January 29th beginning at 9:00 AM, recitation of the Rosary at 10:00 AM and Mass of the Resurrection to follow at 10:30 AM. Entombment in Holy Cross Mausoleum, 17501 Nacogdoches. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the San Antonio Humane Society, the Society of St. Vincent De Paul, or a charity of personal choice.

It was a big loss when Mary passed on. But it felt great to have had the chance to know her - from that first meeting at Ohio State U. in Columbus to the many years at the Dept. of Foreign Languages at San Antonio College

I grew up with Eileen(my dads cousin) and Mary in San Antonio and have wonderful memories of them comning over to the house on Sundays for BBQ and swimming. We loved going to their home for Spaghetti dinners and swim parties. All 6 kids thought of Eileen and Mary as our Aunts. Mary was such a sweet and loving lady. She will be missed

Rest in peace, Aunt Mary. Our family is spread far and wide but we take great solace in that we're all still family together. We will miss you and are grateful for your life.

Madame Zang I looked for you. I have been teaching French 32 years now I wanted you to know. Finally I have found you my dear teacher and friend. Oh how blessed I am to have had you as my teacher. I love you dearly my sweet Madame. I have the book you carried with you all the time you taught me. Only God knew I always wanted to see it and 5 years ago I found it in a bookroom, I wept because God let me hold it as I teach my kids. Rest in Peace my Dear. Pray for me as you meet with Jesus and I will pray for your family I know they will miss you. Thank you for your kindness and for preparing me to continue sharing our love for the French language. Your student, Marina Redgate Garcia
