How sorry I am to hear that Jerry is no longer among us. He was my friend at Hall High as I worked in the garden, making his rounds, checking the doors, sometimes sharing a chuckle, or admonishing me for leaving a door open. He had a gentle and quiet manner that served to challenge me to see how I could get him to loosen up and crack a smile while he was on the job. He told me that he was a little embarrassed to accept a tomato or pepper from the garden if he did not do anything to deserve it. I am so glad I had the opportunity to set him straight on this to tell him that he deserved many more tomatoes that our school garden could possibly grow! I will miss Jerry.

Dear Jim and the Lavery family
I was deeply saddened to hear of Gerry's passing, and regret that I was out of state and could not atten his services. Gerry and I grew up in our law enforcement careers together, and I will always remember his as a trusted friend and colleague. Please accept my sincere sympathy and kind thoughts for the family in this difficult time. Bill Keehner, Deputy Chief of Police (ret.), Rocky Hill Police

My condolences to Gerry's family and friends. I am so sad to have lost him. I work at Hall and was lucky enough to have lunch with him a couple of years ago. Sometimes we just ate quietly, but more often I had the pleasure of hearing his stories. There is no one like him. We will miss him dearly.

With deepest sympathy and heartfelt condolences to the entire Lavery family. I was proud to have known Gerry, and thankfully his brother Peter, for years in Newington. I was always impressed with how quiet, professional and caring Gerry was. May his soul, and those of his predeceased family be at peace in Heaven. A true loss to so many.

Gerry was the salt of the earth. I was always inspired by his kindness and support of his colleagues, teachers and students. He had such a calming presence. As a teacher, coach and most recently an attendance para we have engaged in so many conversations over the last 14 years. He was so proud and loved his family so deeply and would get a sparkle in his eye when speaking of all their accomplishments. I love Gerry and will miss seeing him daily. Prayers and condolences to the Lavery family and friends.

I loved working with Jerry and will miss him greatly. Over the years we shared many quiet "hallway conversations" about life and work and people and family. He was observant, clear sighted, kind, and wise. He was also an amazing listener - a truly rare quality. I left every conversation feeling heard and - more importantly - understood. Over the years I practiced listening as well as he did. In doing so, I learned of his bedrock pride in his family - particularly his children. I will miss him and always be grateful for the chance to have worked with and learned from him.
