Thomas was born September 1, 1940 to the late Kenneth E. and Dorothy J. (nee VanAusdale) Kern in Oberlin. Thomas was a 1959 graduate of Oberlin High School. He served six years in the Ohio Air National Guard being honorably discharged as Airman First Class in 1968. His wife Jean described one of their favorite trips taking the boat down the Intercostal Waterway and through New York Harbor one week after 9/11/01. Tom earned his master captains License from the U.S. Coast Guard and captained for the Lorain Port Authority. Besides renovation and boating Tom had many hobbies which included waterskiing, downhill skiing, lake-glass jewelry making, traveling internationally, golf and tending to his yard. We are so sorry to just now hear of Tom's passing. Through sheer luck or perhaps providence, our group had the pleasure of meeting Tom and Jean early on during a tour of Italy several years ago. Within a nanosecond of saying hello, this dynamic couple somehow transformed themselves into lifelong friends. There followed a most enjoyable romp through Italy with Tom somehow managing to instigate one memorable moment after the next. His smile was infectious lighting the way through the most darkened caverns. I fear some parts of Rome may never be the same. Upon our return to the states, our bond with Tom and Jean strengthened with annual reunions each winter in Florida. This year's stay will not be as bright. We will miss our friends terribly. Hopefully, Jean will rejoin us when the time is right. Our prayers and heartfelt condolences to all the family. Rest in Peace, Tom, Thanks for sharing a part of your life with us. Kern family....... We are so sorry to hear of Tom's passing. Just saying his name makes me smile, he was such a kind man he always felt like my Daddy. Not to long ago he showed up at my Mom's wake, I remember catching those eyes and that kind smile, it was so comforting. Wishing we could be there with you all, please feel our Hugs from Geneva Illinois. Such fond memories I will ALWAYS have!!! Much Love Jean!
