Thomas Neumayr Obituary

Published by CLOSED-Crosby-N. Gray & Co. Funeral Home and Cremation Service on Jul. 2, 2017.
Thomas George Neumayr of Hillsborough, 85, passed away peacefully on July 2, 2017. He was the beloved husband of Alice Devine Neumayr for 56 years. He was a devoted father to Preston (Rena Neumayr), Evelyn (David Coglizer), Jane (Chris Galli), and Thomas Neumayr. He was always surrounded by his grandchildren: Alice and Michelle Coglizer, Christopher and Ella Galli, and Nicole, Michelle, and Laura Neumayr, along with their mother Lynne Neumayr. Tom was born in Minnesota in 1932, the third son of George and Evelyn Neumayr. He had two brothers, Robert and Jack Neumayr, and a sister, Mary Anne Bertken. Tom attended St. Cecelia's grammar school in San Francisco and graduated from St. Ignatius High School in 1950. He graduated from Notre Dame University in South Bend, Indiana in 1954. Tom then attended Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington D.C. before completing a general internal medicine internship at the Southern Pacific Hospital in San Francisco. It was during this time that he met the love of his life, Alice Devine, and they wed in 1960. Soon after the wedding they left for Arizona and Tom completed two years of military service. His primary role was as a doctor for the Public Health Service on the Navajo and Hopi Indian reservation in Keams Canyon, Arizona. Tom then returned to San Francisco and completed his residency in ophthalmology at the University of California San Francisco. He joined the Peninsula Eye Physicians group and moved to Hillsborough with his family. He had a long and distinguished career as an ophthalmologist and retired at age 78. One of Thomas' favorite hobbies was fly fishing. He also enjoyed cycling, boating at Lake Tahoe, traveling, building model boats, and watching Notre Dame football as well as Warriors basketball. He loved being outdoors and greatly appreciated nature. In later years, his favorite thing to do was spend weekends in Kenwood. He loved talking to people as he had a sincere interest in them – whether it was family, friends, or patients. He had an understated dry sense of humor that everyone loved. His quick wit, intelligence, smile and expressive eyes, charm, and above all his love for his family will be sorely missed. Relatives and friends are invited to visit after 6:00 pm and attend the Rosary service at 7:00 pm, Monday, July 10th at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, 1310 Bayswater Avenue in Burlingame. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, July 11th at 10:00 am, also at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church in Burlingame. In lieu of flowers, donations to the City of Hope are appreciated.

My late husband, Jim, and I were always so fond of Tom--as our doctor, friend, and his and Jim's medical professional relationship for many years. Tom held a special place in his field for his ability, patient-care, personal kindness, and jovial , witty personality. He leaves an indelible memory as he has received his heavenly reward forever more. With special sincerity and compassion for Alice at this challenge in her life,

Even after retiring in 2010, Tom's patients continue today to ask me about him and to send their warm wishes. He is remembered fondly at the practice and I was lucky to have worked with him. Tom was a big, tall, dignified-looking man. However, beneath those imposing appearances you met a true Renaissance man who could easily talk about opera, his grandkids, fly fishing, and Notre Dame football in one conversation. I found that I was often late seeing my own patients because I was so interested in my conversations with him. He was a great story teller with a sharp wit. Most of all, Tom was a kind person who people, patients, and staff trusted. We will miss him greatly.
