I´m so sorry I can´t be in Pelham for Barbara today, and glad that Damian can be there. As spectacular as her academic and professional achievements were, she was a truly awesome person, and we are all the poorer for her loss. Much love to Peter, Gavin and her extended family.

Peter, thank you for sharing Barbara with us. I think I told you this, but I saw my first patient ever with her in 2005 and she inspired me and thousands of others through her passion for patients and science. If I achieve 10% of what she did in her career I'll consider my life a huge success.

Finding it hard to comprehend that the kindest, most wonderful, brightest ,and, all round beautiful human that I ,or the world ,have ever had the honour/luck of knowing is not here. We forged different paths through the years, that´s life . I will forever remember soo very fondly our cheeky giggling friendship. It´s not fair! We both know that. Love and miss you always X.

Our hearts are all broken. Barbara was an accomplished physician scientist who served as an amazing role model especially to our female faculty.
She was our advocate, a friend, a trusted comrade and a genuinely kind person whose mission was to advance individuals career and science.
I would like a moment to reach out to Gavin. Gavin, your mother adored you and was so proud of every step you took. I had a meeting every month with your mom, one-on-one, to discuss business yet the first 5-10 minutes was always about you. You brightened her life and brought smiles whenever she mentioned you. Being your mother was her biggest accomplishment. Cherish the memories to help ease the pain.
In deepest sympathy,
Judy Aberg

Peter, Gavin, and Barbara were an incredible team. Barbara, no matter how busy, came to school functions and meetings. While busy at work she took time to visit me when I was in the hospital. Such a glorious woman, brilliant, kind, and compassionate. I know her loss to her family, her friends, and her far-reaching professional community will be huge. My heartfelt condolences to Peter and Gavin. I am grateful for the community of friends and family who are supporting you.

Dr. Murphy was a brilliant scientist, transplant nephrologist, innovator, advocate, feminist - and most importantly for me and so many others - a friend & mentor, who always reminded her mentees their personal happiness was more important than all else. I am incredibly grateful and lucky to be able to call myself one of her many mentees.
Miss you everyday, Dr. Murphy and am always striving to follow your advice: "You cannot have an impact if you live in the shadows afraid to fail or afraid of upsetting others. Success is not about abstracts, papers, awards, or titles. It is about having a positive impact on the lives of others, about meaningful change."

Barbara was so generous with her limited time. She and her husband came to dinner with us when my daughter moved to Brooklyn after college so that my daughter would have a contact in NYC. We also tried to recruit her to Oregon back in the day when she wasn't so famous but still very accomplished and clearly a significant presence. This is a big loss for so many, family, friends, colleagues and community.

Thank you for all the laughs we had from our first meeting on elective in Cornwall and our travels and adventures after that, all the while it was slowly dawning on me that you were not just funny, you were also brilliant but I never saw you happier than when you got together with Peter and built a whole new wonderful life together.

Barbara was an inspirational human being. She was a compassionate physician, inventive scientist, and dedicated educator and mentor. She carried herself with grace, poise, and kindness. She will always be remembered by the countless trainees and faculty who had the privilege of knowing her and learning from her.

O Lord,
support us all the day long of this troublous life, until the shadows lengthen, and the evening comes, and the busy world is hushed,
and the fever of life is over, and our work is done. Then, Lord, in thy mercy,
grant us a safe lodging, a holy rest,
and peace at the last.
Amen

Barbara was extremely close to me; she was a special person with incredible qualities attracting all of those around her like a magnet. She was extremely intelligent, sensitive, loving, forever curious, and a true friend to many of us that were lucky enough to have met her. She was always generous with her time, and always happy to help those that needed it.
Barbara was the first person that I met after landing in Boston, when we both joined the Immunogenetics and Transplantation laboratory as research fellows, with Mohamed Sayegh and Bernie Carpenter as our mentors. Our friendship grew rapidly and with the perfect environment that Mohamed Sayegh created for the trainees in his lab, we were able to enjoy science while nurturing deep friendships, a truly magic recipe. We created fantastic memories of those times, and those moments will be immortalized within me forever.
Barbara and I kept those memories in our pockets like little coins of gold we would hold on to when we both departed down our own roads. When we would visit each other, it felt like no time had passed and we were back to our younger years of working together.
Barbara will never be forgotten, her impressive contributions to the field of nephrology and her loving relationships with all of those around her have created a legacy that will last forever in her name.
I miss her dearly, and my heart goes out to her husband Peter and her son Gavin, and the remainder of her family.

My sincerest condolences to Dr. Barbara Murphy's family. She was an incredible doctor who achieved so much throughout her esteemed career and always put the needs of her patients first. I first came to know Barbara through an alumni scholarship that she founded at my college in honour of her parents. As a mentor, she was always ready to lend a hand and offer any sage advice that she had. Dr. Murphy was a truly remarkable woman who was always generous with her time and talents. She was be greatly missed.

Barbara and I overlapped as fellows when the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Brigham and Women´s (BWH) Hospital were merging their nephrology fellowship programs. Barbara was a 4th-year fellow doing her clinical rotations (as back then numerous of the BWH fellows did their research years first) and I was a 1st-year MGH fellow starting out (prior to my research time). It was obvious that she was smart and generous even then. It´s been great to see her star rise over the years despite her dealing with some chronic health issue. Please accept my deepest condolences. I have always thought Barbara's success meant things were alright in academic medicine when brilliance, hard work and kindness are recognized and rewarded.

I remember feeling extremely nervous as I started a collaborative project with Dr. Barbara Murphy. From my eyes, she was a well poised, confident, determined woman who was an international leader in the field of transplantation. I was a bit intimidated and nervous since I was not sure what I would be able to add to the collaboration given her experience and accomplishments. In a very short time, I learned that she was an extremely supportive individual and a willing mentor. It was even more inspiring to see her dedication and perseverance as she managed her personal challenges with the challenges of work in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.
It has been said that "The size of one´s will which determines success". Dr. Murphy had incredible `will´ and it is unbelievable that she is not here with us now.
Cherishing the memories with great respect...

Deepest condolences to Dr. Murphy´s family, and to all friends, patients & colleagues impacted by this terrible loss.
o I´ve been touched & inspired by Dr. Murphy´s intelligence, grace & leadership across my career, starting w/ meeting her at the inaugural AST Fellow´s Symposium early in my training. It was a great honor to work with Dr. Murphy in collaborations incl. ASN & AST Committees, meetings such as the FDA Transplant Immunosuppression workshop, and on the NIH APOLLO steering committee.
o Dr. Murphy´s contributions to scholarship, administration & policy shaped transplant immunology, patient care & advocacy, and inspired countless Women-In-Medicine and individuals across disciplines. Dr. Murphy will be deeply missed but her transformative legacy will never be forgotten.
