Giancarlo Tambellini, 90, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, passed away unexpectedly on September 4th, 2021. John is survived by his 5 children, Christiana Mikrut, John Daniel (Carol Steinmetz) Tambellini, Timothy Albert Tambellini, Laurie Ann Tambellini and Rebecca Lynn Tambellini. He is pre-deceased by his beloved wife Donna Marie Tambellini (Loeffler) and his eldest son Marco Mario Tambellini. John was a beloved grandfather to Timothy James Tambellini, Victoria Tambellini, Jaclyn Barber, Anthony Tambellini, Danielle Tambellini, Michael Tambellini, Kasey Lee, Victor Diaz and Johnny Vitanovich. John is pre- deceased by Maria Carla Tambellini; great grandfather to Colton Lee, Skylar Lee, Townes Henry Tambellini, Luca Rowe and Annaliese Barber. John was born in Lucca, Italy on August 18, 1931 to Mario and Adele Tambellini. He is survived by his siblings in Italy, Sandra Bilia, Christiana Bianchi, Tamara Scardiglia and Marco Tambellini. He is pre-deceased by his beloved sister and her husband, Carla and Tullio Pieretti. John immigrated to the United States in 1952 and established himself in the restaurant industry in Pittsburgh, working his way up the ladder into ownership. John has been recognized as a successful Restauranteur in Pittsburgh for over 60 plus years, he was the face of Louis Tambellini's and his expertise in operations and hospitality mixed with his attention to detail made those around him take note. His debonair style and charisma was the driving force to the success on Mt. Washington, and eventually lead to his ownership at Louis Tambellini's on RT 51. John was known for his warm handshake or an arm around the shoulder and his ability to command a room. He epitomized sophistication without pretense. John had inherited the Tuscan appreciation of food combined with the great American work ethic, allowing him to successfully achieve the American Dream. He had a way of making his customers feel as if they were sharing a meal in his home. He treated everyone special and therefore, everyone treated John special. He was recognized everywhere he traveled, his reputation superseded him. John leaves behind countless friends, acquaintances and his own special legacy in both cities of Pittsburgh and Lucca. John has been recognized by The Chamber of Commerce of Lucca and the Lucchesi nel Mondo Association, in which they reward their countrymen who have contributed over the years to the economic and social growth of the host countries, keeping the name of Lucca and its province. As a father and grandfather, he was greatly loved and will be dearly missed and remembered for his beautiful smile, generosity, wisdom, loving guidance and a silly jokester with a quick wit. He loved spending time with his family, showed a passion for lawn and gardening, golfing, playing cards and bocce ball with his friends. It must be said, that he had a great love of animals, he raised chickens as a young boy in Italy, he loved feeding the birds, deer and squirrels that would visit his back yard in Greentree, where he and his wife Donna raised their 6 children. John and Donna were married 60 years, until her passing in 2014. John held a special place in his heart for the dogs in his life, especially Arthur, his grand dog. If John was in the room you knew where the dogs were. Like the people in his life, dogs gravitated right to and around him. Giancarlo's brother Marco, called him, "a father for everyone". Our dear Father and Pap Pap passed peacefully and will be laid to rest with his beloved wife Donna Marie at The Queen of Heaven Cemetery. Simply the BEST!
No one was better in the restaurant industry than John!
My blessing was having met him and to call him my friend.
My wife and I loved him and the many many, celebrations at his establishment.

Dear Tambellini Family,
I cannot express how much respect I have for John. He inspired me everyday when I worked at Tambellini's (51). I was fortunate to see John in the Strip District a few years back and gave him a hug & kiss. I'm very sorry for your loss. He will never be forgotten! May he R.I.P. ❤

I regret that we were unable to make it back to Pittsburgh for John's services. On our first trip to Lucca 2018 my mother was a Tambellini, whose entire family was from Lucca. John introduced us to his niece, Franchesca. We stayed at her B&B on both of our visits. She took us to Sante Alessio church were both of my greatgrand parents were married and introduced us to her mother Tamara, John's sister. We also meet Maria Carlo Bianchi another of John's nieces. We brought back family photos we took for John. His kindness was greatly appreciated. We grew to love him and I would tell him he was probably my distant uncle. I feel so privileged to have met John and we offer our thoughts, condolences, love and prayers to John's entire family. May he rest in peace! Jerry and Chris Metcalf

From the time I was 3, every Friday night our parents took us on the hill. Was there the final night and opened the restaurant on 51. Sitting at the bar was a ritual. John would look at me, I would nod my head yes or no, he would laugh. Our wedding rehearsal, every New Years Eve and in labor I was eating escargot! What a fine man bringing back beautiful memories. My deepest sympathies to the entire family. My God Bless
