Börje Salming (1951–2022), legendary Maple Leafs defenseman

Börje Salming was a legendary defenseman for the Toronto Maple Leafs who was the first Swedish player inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.  

Toronto Maple Leafs legend 

Börje Salming was playing hockey in Sweden when he was scouted and signed by the Toronto Maple Leafs of the NHL in 1973. He had a brilliant career in Toronto and is still the franchise leader in points and goals scored by a defenseman. He was a first team All-Star in 1977, a five-time second team All-Star selection and was the first European born player to appear in 1,000 NHL games. Salming was the first Swedish player to play a tough physical style in the NHL. Salming played 16 seasons in Toronto and played one last season with the Red Wings in 1989. He was the first Swedish player inducted into the Hall of Fame and he had his number 21 retried by the Maple Leafs.
