Brandon Hunter (1980–2023), former NBA forward

by Linnea Crowther

Brandon Hunter was a standout basketball player at Ohio University who became a power forward in the NBA for the Boston Celtics and Orlando Magic.

Brandon Hunter’s legacy

Hunter joined Ohio’s basketball team in 1999 and became a star there, leading NCAA Division I in rebounds his senior year, with an average 12.6 rebounds. With 1,103 rebounds during his college career, he remains the best rebounder in Ohio’s history, and his career 2,012 points make him their fifth best scorer in history. In 2022, he was inducted into the school’s Kermit Blosser Ohio Athletics Hall of Fame.

Hunter was a second-round draft pick in the 2003 NBA draft, selected by the Celtics. His NBA career proved to be short, as he played just a single season for the Celtics and another for the Magic. Briefly signed by the Milwaukee Bucks and later the Cleveland Cavaliers, he was released by both teams, spending the remainder of his playing career with European teams such as Italy’s Angelico Biella and Germany’s BBC Bayreuth.

After retiring from playing in 2013, Hunter was a private coach, and he worked in real estate. He founded a sports management company in 2021.
