by Linnea Crowther

Charles Kimbrough was an actor best known for starring on “Murphy Brown.”

Acting career

Kimbrough starred as the uptight veteran news anchor Jim Dial on “Murphy Brown” from 1988 to 1998, a main character throughout the show’s original run of 10 seasons. In the 2018 revival, Kimbrough returned as Jim. He was nominated for an Emmy Award in 1990 for his performance. Another notable role came with Disney’s 1996 animated feature film “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” in which Kimbrough was the voice of the gargoyle Victor. He reprised the role in the movie’s direct-to-video sequel, as well as in several Disney video games. Kimbrough’s other movies included “The Seduction of Joe Tynan” and “The Wedding Planner,” and he made appearances on TV shows such as “Kojak,” “Spenser: For Hire,” and “Ally McBeal.” In 1971, he was nominated for a Tony Award for his performance in “Company;” he originated the role of Harry on Broadway.

Notable quote

“Unfortunately, I’m really good at playing jackasses of one kind of another. I’ve always been slightly self-conscious as an actor, and I guess that sometimes reads as pomposity. … I’ve finally learned to revel in it. I learned to take the parts I was getting and make the most out of them that I could.” —from a 2012 interview for the Wall Street Journal
