Charles Siebert (1938–2022), “Trapper John, M.D.” star

by Linnea Crowther

Charles Siebert was an actor and director who starred as Dr. Stanley Riverside II on “Trapper John, M.D.”

Actor and director

Siebert was a classically trained actor who began his career with roles including Broadway productions and New York City’s Shakespeare in the Park. His early TV appearances included “Another World,” “Kojak,” “All in the Family,” and recurring roles on “Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman” and “One Day at a Time.” He joined the cast of “Trapper John, M.D.” as the pompous Dr. Riverside, appearing in all of the show’s episodes over seven seasons. Siebert began his directorial career with several episodes of “Trapper John, M.D.,” and he continued to direct TV shows after the show’s end. His directorial credits include episodes of “Knots Landing,” “Silk Stalkings,” “Hercules: The Legendary Journeys,” and “Xena: Warrior Princess.” He also continued to act, with appearances on “Matlock,” “Murder, She Wrote,” and “Xena, Warrior Princess.” Though his career was largely focused on TV, Siebert also appeared in movies including “…And Justice for All” and “Eight Men Out.”

Siebert on transitioning to directing

“I had always been interested directing and I had also thought I would be a director. I developed a career as an actor which was pretty good and then wound up raising and supporting a family. Probably did not have the nerve to just drop the acting for a long time in order to try to pursue the directing. I went where the acting took me for some time and eventually it took me to an opportunity where I could direct, which was on “Trapper John, M.D.” … [I]t took some time because people thought of me as an actor. So it took me probably about 10 years to make the transition completely.” —source
