Singing with her family
McCrary wasn’t a founding member of the group – it was initially a trio, formed by her sisters, Ann, Regina, and Alfreda McCrary. McCrary was working as a nurse when her sisters asked her to join the group, and it became a quartet. They collaborated with artists including Carrie Underwood, Gregg Allman (1947–2017), Margo Price, and Sheryl Crow, as well as recording their own music. The McCrary Sisters’ debut album, “Our Journey,” was released in 2010, followed by four other albums. McCrary wrote a number of the songs they performed, including “Hello Jesus.” The sisters were also part of the house band at the Americana Music Honors & Awards ceremony.
Notable quote
“I didn’t call it writing songs, but I always did write poems. … I pulled out some of my poems and they said, ‘This is a song!’ Ann starts singing, Regina starts putting a beat to it. Before long, all three of them was contributing to one of my poems. Ended up in a song.” —from a 2013 interview for American Songwriter
