Elaine Devry’s legacy
Born in Compton, California, Devry became comfortable being in front of the camera by the age of 15, when she began a modeling career. In 1952, she met actor and comedian Mickey Rooney. The pair married that same year. After a small uncredited role in the 1953 Rooney comedy, “A Slight Case of Larceny,” she got her first major film role the following year, playing Audrey Nelson in the Rooney-led science fiction comedy, “The Atomic Kid.” The pair divorced in 1958.
Other works followed, including 1958’s “China Doll,” the 1961 noir “Man-Trap,” and the 1967 comedy “A Guide for the Married Man,” starring Walter Matthau, Robert Morse, and Inger Stevens. Devry also made frequent television appearances, including on shows like “Perry Mason,” “I Dream of Jeannie,” “Marcus Welby,” and “Dragnet.”
Devry had a small role in 1974’s “Herbie Rides Again” and in two episodes of the 1978 TV show “Project U.F.O.” before leaving acting for nearly two decades. She returned in 1996 for an episode of “Beverly Hills Bordello,” then had her final role in 1999, in the low budget comedy, “Heart-to-Heart.com.” She retired to Grants Pass, Oregon.
