Fruit Breeder Extraordinaire
Zaiger was one of the world’s greatest fruit breeders who developed over 400 new varieties of fruits and nuts. He learned the craft from Fred Anderson who created the nectarine. Zaiger was obsessed with making a fruit variety that combined the peach and the plum. He came up with the popular Pluot, a cross between an apricot and a plum, that was said to revolutionize the plum industry. He also created the independence almond variety that does not require pollination by bees.
