Geechy Guy (1964–2023), Guinness record-setting comic

by Linnea Crowther

Geechy Guy was a standup comedian often seen in Las Vegas clubs who set a Guinness World Record for the most jokes told in an hour.

Geechy Guy’s legacy

Born Michael Paul Cathers, Guy began working as a standup in the Detroit area, where he grew up. He was initially successful when he competed on “Star Search” in the early 1990s, beating future “Everybody Loves Raymond” star Ray Romano. Later, he competed on “America’s Got Talent,” and he appeared on such TV shows as “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” and “The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson.”

Guy became a staple of Las Vegas nightclubs, including Brad Garrett’s Comedy Club at MGM Grand and the Laugh Factory at the Tropicana. He was known for his rapid-fire one-liners, which he called “joke grenades,” often saying, “You’ll get these later.” He earned his Guinness World Record by telling 676 jokes in one hour.

Notable quote

“I just got drunk on rum cake. The only thing that sobered me up was coffee cake.” —from Guy’s stand-up act
