Grayson Murray’s legacy

Grayson Murray was excelling at golf at an early age, winning both team and individual state titles while playing at Leesville Road High School in Raleigh, North Carolina. For three straight years, he won the Junior World championship in San Diego.

Murray earned his PGA Tour card in 2017 after six top-10 finishes. That same year, he earned his first PGA Tour victory when he won the Barbasol Championship. His second PGA Tour win came in 2024, when he took the Sony Open in Hawaii in January.

Murray was open about his struggles with anxiety, depression, and drinking. In 2014, he once walked away from a tournament while in the lead, citing anxiety. He withdrew from the Charles Schwab Challenge the day before taking his own life. In addition to his PGA Tour wins, he was a three-time winner on the Korn Ferry Tour, and he had 10 top-10 finishes in 141 starts on the PGA Tour. At the time of his death, he was ranked 58th in the world.

Notable quote

“I thought I was invincible coming out here as a 22-year-old, winning as a rookie, played three days hungover when I won. Best thing and worst thing that ever happened to me was winning my rookie year — but also feeling like I was invincible.” — CBS Sports, 2024
