by Linnea Crowther

Jean Veloz was a dancer known for the Lindy Hop, which she performed in movies including “Swing Fever.”

Lindy Hop

Veloz grew up swing dancing with her brothers and friends, and she came to prominence when she was just a teen. She won a Hollywood dance contest, with a prize of a Screen Actors’ Guild card and a film appearance. Veloz demonstrated the Lindy Hop in the 1944 short “Groovie Movie,” and she was a featured dancer in 1943’s “Swing Fever.” She also had uncredited roles as a dancer in the 1940s movies “Where Are Your Children,” “Jive Junction,” and “The Horn Blows at Midnight.” Though her movie career was short, Veloz continued dancing all her life. She taught dance as well as demonstrating it at festivals and workshops. In 2016, she appeared on an episode of “The Bachelorette” to teach the Lindy Hop to a contestant.

Notable quote
