Mark Withers’ legacy
After getting his start in commercials, Withers broke into episodic TV in the late 1970s, appearing in such shows as “How the West Was Won” and “Wonder Woman.” He had a main role in the single-season crime drama “Kaz” before landing the part for which many remember him best. He joined the cast of “Dynasty” in the sixth episode of the 1981 first season, playing Steven Carrington’s former boyfriend. Carrington was a groundbreaking gay main character, one of the first on TV, and his relationship with Dinard was equally noteworthy. Withers remained on the show for a six-episode arc before his character’s death.
Withers’ next major role was on “Days of Our Lives,” playing Coach Locke in 1986 and ’87. He appeared widely elsewhere on TV in the ‘80s, including in episodes of “The Greatest American Hero,” “Trapper John, M.D.,” “Magnum, P.I.,” “The Dukes of Hazzard,” “Hill Street Blues,” “Dallas,” “L.A. Law,” and “Matlock.”
Among Withers’ more recent notable credits was a Season One episode of “Stranger Things.” He played Morris in three episodes of the sixth season of “True Blood.” Withers also had roles in “Fraser,” “The King of Queens,” “Criminal Minds,” “Castle,” and “Sense8.”
