Mister Cee (1966–2024), influential hip-hop DJ

by Eric San Juan

Mister Cee was an influential hip-hop DJ who spun for Big Daddy Kane and helped discover Notorious B.I.G.

Mister Cee’s legacy

Brooklyn-born Calvin LeBrun, better known to the world as Mister Cee, was a DJ and radio personality who helped discover two of the most influential rappers in hip-hop history. He honed his DJ skills at a young age under the tutelage of DJ Knight and the Knights of Hollywood, then met an aspiring rapper named Antonio Hardy while in high school. Cee began DJing for Hardy, who is better known by his stage name: Big Daddy Kane. Kane’s debut record, “Long Live the Kane,” established him as one of the most formidable rappers of the era, and it featured the track, “Mister Cee’s Master Plan.”

Cee was a NYC radio DJ in the 1990s, during which time he often shone a spotlight on up-and-coming hip-hop talent. He hosted shows on Hot97 and WBLS, where he featured impressive new rappers. Among his discoveries was Christopher “The Notorious B.I.G.” Wallace, aka Biggie Smalls. Cee helped Wallace record his first demo, which subsequently landed him a record deal with Bad Boy Records. The Notorious B.I.G.’s debut record, “Ready to Die,” is widely considered a massive landmark in hip-hop and cemented the late MC in music history.
