Nick Mavar’s legacy

From the early days of Discovery’s long-running reality show “Deadliest Catch,” detailing the lives of professional fishermen, Nick Mavar was there, working as a deckhand on board the Northwestern under Captain Sig Hansen. He became a mainstay on the series, appearing in 98 episodes.

Mavar toiled with Hansen for over 25 years, only some of it captured on film for the popular show. One of his best-known moments on “Deadliest Catch” came in 2011, when a storm broke a hook loose that struck the fisherman in the face and broke his nose.

He left “Deadliest Catch” in its 17th season after suffering from a ruptured appendix while filming. He later sued his employer, claiming they did not provide timely care that could have prevented the rupture.

Mavar’s nephew told The New York Times he died after suffering a heart attack while on a ladder at an Alaskan boatyard.
