Peter Tuiasosopo (1963–2025), Necessary Roughness actor

by Eric San Juan

Peter Tuiasosopo was a former NFL center for the Los Angeles Rams who later became an actor, appearing in films including “Street Fighter and “Necessary Roughness.”

Peter Tuiasosopo’s legacy

Some knew him from his time in the NFL, where he played with the Los Angeles Rams. Others for his time on screen, where his intimidating size made him an imposing presence. And many knew Tuiasosopo as a man of faith who shared his big heart with others.

A native of San Pedro, California, Tuiasosopo played football at Utah State University before being drafted into the NFL, first by the St. Louis Cardinals, then, after being released, by the Rams. He played during the 1987-88 season as one of the league’s replacement players, appearing in three games before being released.

Tuiasosopo moved into acting, using his notable presence to land roles as athletes, tough guys, and other formidable figures. His first appearance was in the 1991 sports comedy “Necessary Roughness.” He also appeared as fan favorite E. Honda in the 1994 film adaptation of “Street Fighter,” a popular video game series, and he had a cameo in “BASEketball,” a 1998 sports comedy. Tuiasosopo’s other film credits include “Batman & Robin,” “The Fast and the Furious,” and “The Scorpion King,” plus he had roles on episodes of numerous TV shows, such as “Danger Theatre,” “Hawaii,” “New Girl,” “Black-ish,” and “NCIS.”

Aside from acting, Tuiasosopo touched lives when he founded the Global Family Prayer Chain Ministry, an online meeting that gathered Christians of varied denominations during the COVID-19 pandemic, created to bring people of faith together amid difficulty. It has continued to operate since.

Tributes to Peter Tuiasosopo

I am so sad, Peter Tuiasosopo, who played Manumana in Necessary Roughness, the greatest American football movie ever made, has passed away. I loved him in that movie and in Street Fighter. QDEP
